Helene D. Gayle, M.D., MPH, officially started her tenure as the 11th president of Spelman College on July 1, 2022.

Most recently, Dr. Gayle served as president and CEO of The Chicago Community Trust, one of the nation's oldest and largest community foundations. With a multifaceted career that spans nearly four decades, Dr. Gayle has amassed numerous accomplishments during her time at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and CARE.

Dr. Gayle succeeds Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., following her seven-year tenure as Spelman’s 10th president.

Chosen earlier this year as the College’s Presidential Search Committee’s top candidate, Dr. Gayle’s educational and professional experience rooted in public health, humanitarianism, innovation, and economic development made her a prime pick to continue Spelman College’s growth and commitment to advancement in areas including STEM and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Gayle’s appointment at Spelman marks her return to Atlanta as she prepares to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, alumnae and other crucial partners; explore our cultures and traditions; identify strategic priorities; address critical issues and forge new opportunities for the College.

Spelman College plans to send more women of color into the gaming industry. The nation’s premier liberal arts college for women of African descent just got a helping hand with a $300,000 three-year grant from the Unity Charitable Fund, administered by Tides Foundation, to develop a gaming curriculum supported by Unity Technologies.

Unity was an early funder for Spelman’s Innovation Lab, a campus-wide source for creative inquiry, unconventional research, experimental pedagogy and exploratory play. The new grant will allow the lab to extend gaming efforts to students at other Atlanta University Center institutions, including Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and, possibly, Morris Brown College, said Jerry Volcy, co-director of the Innovation Lab.

“The grant from Unity really allows us to expand the gaming space to include more women of color,” Volcy said. “It gives women of color a voice in the industry and has created a lot of interest in purposeful games.”

The Innovation Lab at Spelman College is home to a budding program, Gaming+, which encompasses game design, gaming theory, game development, elements of interactive media, virtual and extended reality and other technologies linked to gaming.

Hard work is said to be the secret to success, but it’s hard work paired with a commitment to working her way up in journalism and media that’s made Dara Miles, C’95, the force she is today.

“I had to reprogram my brain not to care what anyone thought of me to survive in this industry. I'm not sure I would have been able to do so without the strong sense of self I obtained while at Spelman,” said Miles.

An Emmy award-winning reporter and the creator/executive producer of the Hulu true crime documentary, “Set the Record Straight: The Jam Master Jay Case,” the Fort Worth, Texas native graduated from Spelman with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in Spanish before working across markets and networks as a producer, anchor, and reporter.

Hoping to expand her storytelling and creative skills across mediums, Miles has her sights focused on podcasting and will be launching a line of HBCU pet apparel later this summer.
