Spelman College is expanding its stellar academic model to launch eSpelman, a new enterprise that will deliver online education and certificates to support the career exploration of working adult learners.
Certificates in disciplines such as leadership, business essentials and project management, as well as teacher preparation, cosmetic science, diversity, equity, and inclusion, entrepreneurship and conversational Spanish will be developed and offered through the eSpelman online enterprise.
"Spelman College has spent 140 years providing transformative
educational experiences for Black women who have become global change agents. We’ve always believed in lifelong learning and are excited to expand and extend our offerings to adult learners who are looking to advance their careers, elevate their expertise or explore new fields," said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman. "As a college that consistently leads in numerous rankings from innovation and social mobility to liberal arts and STEM education, Spelman is creating a slate of online programming that will lead to credentials that catapult careers."
The certificates will be offered to working adult learners, of all genders, through two platforms : Guild Education, which partners with leading U.S. employers to offer education as an employee benefit, and directly from eSpelman.

The National Basketball Retired Players Association has selected Erin Foster, C’2024, as a Legends HBCU Scholarship recipient.
Five Legend Scholars were selected from nearly 1,000 HBCU students in recognition of their academic excellence and commitment to making a positive impact in the world. Each student receives a $10,000 academic scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year, as well as assistance in career preparation and development, job placement and mentoring both during, and after their undergraduate years.
"I am honored to represent Spelman as part of the inaugural group of Legends HBCU scholars," said Foster. "I am thankful to the National Basketball Retired Players Association for their assistance in funding my education and for the career development
opportunities made available to me through the Legends Scholars program."
The Legends HBCU Scholarship and Legends Scholars program was created under the NBRPA’s Legends Care initiative to honor the rich history of HBCUs.

National Science Foundation Awards Spelman and Clark Faculty with $3.6M Grant Spelman faculty, in partnership with faculty from Clark Atlanta University and Cornell University, received a $3.6 million research and education grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant
will establish the Partnership for Research and Education in Materials program. Over a six-year period, the grant will allow PREM researchers to focus on the design, synthesis and characterization of new oxide-based interface materials, towards the next generation of electronic, magnetoelectronic and optoelectronic devices. The PREM project will also engaging undergraduate and graduate students in materials science research, seminars and hands-on workshops with the intent of increasing the number of African American students who receive undergraduate and advanced degrees in
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Alumna Hired as an Associate Attorney by Maguire Cardona, PC
Soraya Watkins, C’2011, has joined Albany, New York based law firm Maguire Cardona, PC as an associate attorney. In her new role, Watkins, who is fluent in French and Spanish, will focus on civil litigation law, medical malpractice and other aspects of personal injury. Before joining Maguire Cardona, Watkins worked as an e-discovery attorney and gained experience in several sectors of civil law including fraud, misrepresentation, contract breach and employment law. Admitted to practice law in the state of New York, Watkins is a member of the New York Bar Association, as well as the Albany and Schenectady County Bar Associations.

Crowded settings still present a greater risk of transmission among people who have not been fully vaccinated.
Students and employees, regardless of vaccination status, are expected to observe physical distancing of at least 6 feet. In classroom settings where physical distancing cannot be maintained, masking is required for all students and employees, regardless of vaccination status.
