Registration for Wintermester Still Open

Want to learn more about owning your own business? How about the power of digital and social media marketing? These topics are the focus of two courses available during Spelman’s Wintermester.

Wintermester is an opportunity for students to earn credit between the end of the fall semester and the beginning of the spring semester, Dec. 1, 2020, through Jan. 29, 2021.

Students interested in launching corporations are encouraged to register for MGT 401 - Women in Management and Entrepreneurship, which offers real
-life, hands-on experience in building a business by guiding students through the development and presentation of a business plan.

The MGT 305 – Principles in Marketing class focuses on the power of marketing through a social lens and examines the route between physical production and goods consumption.

“We want students to benefit from these offerings, while thinking about their choices strategically,” said Tiffany Watson, Ph.D., associate provost for executive projects and initiatives. “Academic advisors are always available to meet with students virtually to help in their course selections.”

Registration is open to current Spelman students, as well as those in the Atlanta University Consortium Center.

New Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Daryl Lowe Prioritizes Students’ Holistic Wellness

With students scattered across the United States as a result of the pandemic, Daryl Lowe’s first 90-plus days at Spelman were a whirlwind. In his role, Lowe oversees the Wellness Center, Health Services, Spiritual Life and the Student Access Center.

A Detroit native and Morehouse College graduate, Lowe earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Massachusetts School of Law in Dartmouth and previously served as the first African American assistant vice president and dean of students at Valdosta State University.

Lowe believes there are opportunities for growth and development in areas where Spelman faculty and staff assist students with different needs. He is keen on focusing on the nine dimensions of student wellness, which are physical, emotional, creative, environmental, occupational, intellectual, social, spiritual and financial health.

“Worldwide women are trying to define themselves in the eyes of strangers. We need to do a better job of encouraging them by letting them know that likes and followers do not equal success,” he said. “It’s what you do for yourself and others. Spelman students have a wonderful opportunity to embrace that.”
Two Spelman Juniors Represent Spelman in TMCF Entrepreneur Competition

Spelman juniors Camille Hohl and Diop Russell participated in an entrepreneurship competition sponsored by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Ally and the Sean Anderson Foundation. Their team, which included three students from Morehouse, earned third place.

“The Moguls in the Making competition was filled with powerful speakers, HBCU pride and learning opportunities,” said Russell. “I now know the importance of teamwork and perseverance when developing a compelling pitch.”

Moguls in the Making is aimed at preparing students from historically Black colleges and universities to become future entrepreneurs and members of the business community. Ten HBCUs participated in the competition, which tasked students with developing solutions to economic problems facing various industries. Each team pitched their ideas to a panel of expert judges that included successful entrepreneurs and business leaders.

"We pitched an app that would report street light outages to citizens of Detroit," said Russell. "Not only would our app provide safe and brightly lit travel routes for Detroit Public School students, but it would also incentivize residents to report outages and provides energy companies with the analytics needed to shorten their response time."

Scent-Based Creative Experience Offers a Journey Through the Senses

Perfumer November Nichols, C’94, will lead Conjure: A Scentsory Experience, at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 30, via the Zoom platform. Registration for the event is now open.

The second installment in the Spelman Museum of Fine Art “Inspired By” series, Nichols’ workshop will honor the artistry of Renée Stout, whose compelling work encourages self-examination, self-empowerment and self-healing.

Moved by the ways conjuring appears in Stout’s artwork, Nichols will lead a workshop that uses fragrance and journaling as a guide through the senses.

A desire for “heart work” and deeper connections led Nichols on a journey to wellness practices that she could use to support herself and others. She developed
L’Artisan Muse scent boutique to create a safe place where all of the senses could be invoked to align oneself to live their best lives.
Alumnae Highlights
Spelman alumna, Lisa D. Cook, Ph.D., has been named to the Federal Reserve, Banking and Securities Regulators Group on President-elect Joe Biden's transition team.

Dr. Cook currently holds a dual appointment at Michigan State University where she is a professor in the Department of Economics in the College of Social Science and a professor of international relations at MSU’s James Madison College.

This is not her first time serving in an advisory role in the federal government. During President Barack Obama’s term, Dr. Cook served on the president’s Council of Economic Advisors from 2011 to 2012.

The College’s first Marshall Scholar, Dr. Cook majored in philosophy during her matriculation at Spelman. Since graduating, she has been an active partner with the economics department and their efforts to increase the number of Black women that receive advance degrees in the field.
