As of February 1, 2023, indoor masking is optional, except in campus healthcare settings at Spelman College.

With indoor masking now optional, Spelman College COVID-19 Operations urges the campus community to be mindful of the following:

  • Faculty who are medically high-risk or immunocompromised and have been directed by a medical professional to take extra precautions may ask students to wear masks while in the classroom or instructional space.
  • Be courteous and respectful when entering campus classrooms or learning spaces whose instructors require mask wearing.
  • Students, faculty, staff and visitors should not come to campus if sick, unwell, or COVID-19 positive.
  • Always wear a mask during the 10-day COVID-19 post-exposure or diagnosis period.
  • Continue to wear a mask when in a campus healthcare setting.

In honor of Black History Month, Spelman College honors the life and legacy of civil rights icon and alumna Rosalyn Pope, Ph.D., C’60. Her highly acclaimed work, "An Appeal for Human Rights," became the official manifesto of the Atlanta Student Movement and was instrumental in advancing efforts to end segregation.

Before writing the heartbeat of the Atlanta Student Movement – which was influenced by her time in Paris, France as a Spelman College student – Dr. Pope gained her original interest in activism when she was appointed as the president of Spelman’s Student Government Association. More than 60 years later, she became a staple of the Civil Rights Movement and continued to shape the goals and strategies of a new generation of student activists throughout the nation and the world.

Dr. Pope’s rich legacy continues to resonate, and she never underestimated the value of being a Spelman woman.

"We should never underestimate the great fortune that has befallen us in being a part of the Spelman family," Dr. Pope said in a 2016 interview. "The Spelman story is one of the country’s most inspired sagas, especially as it relates to women of color. It is to be cherished; it is to be told and retold."

Dr. Pope passed away January 18, 2023, at the age of 84.

Black American Portraits is coming to the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art! The exhibit – co-curated by Liz Andrews, executive director of Spelman’s Museum of Fine Art, and Christine Y. Kim, the Tate’s Britton Family Curator-at-Large – pays homage to David C. Driskell’s curated exhibition, Two Centuries of Black American Art, and will be welcomed to Spelman by way of a special opening reception on Friday, Feb. 10, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

From artwork depicted by a range of mediums such as paint, print, photography and sculpture, Black American Portraits offers a juxtaposed view of the visual culture that often demonizes Blackness while highlighting emancipation, scenes from the Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights and Black Power eras, multiculturalism of the 1990s and the spirit of Black Lives Matter. The powerful exhibit also reframes portraiture through celebratory visuals of Black American subjects as the focus and places Black women portrait artists on the center stage.

Precious Williams, J.D., C’2001, is helping women entrepreneurs and business leaders take their speaking skills to the next level as the founder and CEO of Perfect Pitches by Precious.

In addition to teaching other leaders how to pitch and build sales programs, Williams is a world-class speaker and trainer for top brands such as BMW, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Harvard University, Spelman College and Yelp – just to name a few.

As a 13-time national elevator pitch champion and a four-time bestselling author with a career that spans over 25 years, Williams continues to revolutionize the pitching industry. Not only has she completed two TEDx Talks, but she has also appeared on various media platforms like ABC’s "Shark Tank," CNN, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Black Enterprise Magazine as well.

Known to be a trendsetter, Williams describes through her website how her success is a process that she must experience with her client, not simply teach.

"My secret sauce is that I can see into a woman and see exactly what her problem is. I can listen to her and hear what’s being said and what’s not being said underneath," said Williams. "I can take wherever she is right now and enhance that. The very thing she is fearful of, is the very thing that is her secret weapon."
