As we mark the start of the fall semester, Spelman COVID-19 Operations wants to ensure the Spelman community has the latest health and safety information about the Monkeypox virus outbreak that is being monitored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health authorities.Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the Monkeypox virus. The Monkeypox virus is part of the same family of viruses like the virus that causes smallpox. Monkeypox is rarely fatal, and it can be contracted by any individual regardless of age or gender.According to the CDC, Monkeypox can spread in several ways like close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact, including direct contact with Monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with Monkeypox; touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels), and surfaces that have been used by someone with Monkeypox; direct contact with respiratory secretions from a person with Monkeypox.Considering the seriousness of the disease, it is incredibly important to know the signs and symptoms of infection. Monkeypox infection typically produces rashes on the face, mouth, hands, feet, chest or genitals. Other symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion. Symptoms typically last two (2) to four (4) weeks. A person infected with Monkeypox is considered contagious until the rash has fully healed and a fresh layer of skin has formed.Updates on Monkeypox mitigation and protection efforts are forthcoming. Kaitlyn Tidwell, C’2023, is the recent recipient of the Fashion Fair-Spelman Scholarship Fund award.Established at Spelman College in October 2021 by Fashion Fair Cosmetics to provide financial assistance – in addition to mentorship and internship opportunities – for Spelman students that display leadership qualities who are interested in entrepreneurial careers specifically in the areas of cosmetics, skincare and beauty, the fund awards $25,000 to each recipient that can be used to cover tuition, books and other related fees.In addition to her studies at Spelman, Tidwell, a sewing enthusiast, is the talent behind the brand SHILAKEN [Shy – Lack – En] – creating her designs from thrifted garments or secondhand fabrics. She credits her great-grandmother and grandmother for her knack for sewing.“I don’t only consider myself a designer but more of an artist,” she said of her work. “All the pieces I create are one of one. Nothing is ever duplicated in exact format.”The Columbus, Ohio senior started her brand just before graduating high school, then specializing in satin-lined bonnets and other hair accessories. However, in 2020, the start of the COVID-19 pandemic gave Tidwell the time and opportunity to branch out and try new projects. By 2021, her new, unique creations were garnering more attention than she ever expected.“I was able to create my first ever showcase, displayed at Clark Atlanta University's Homecoming in 2021,” said Tidwell. “Since then, I have been in a show at Morehouse and GSU.”When Tidwell isn’t focused on creating for her brand, the economics major works with preschool children and has her sights on a possible career in financial advising or wealth management.
