Spelman College was recently named a Fulbright Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Institutional Leader for 2024. Each year, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) recognizes the engagement of HBCUs with the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government's flagship international academic exchange program.

Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders demonstrate noteworthy support for Fulbright exchange participants and encourage administrators, faculty and students at HBCUs to engage with Fulbright on campus.

Spelman College partnered with the Brookings Institution, the number one think tank in the world, to take a proactive approach in assessing the impact of AI on the upcoming election and future legislation.

In a two-day event titled "The promise and perils of AI: Issues at stake in the 2024 election," leaders from Spelman and Brookings recently convened to discuss the guardrails and policies required to mitigate the potential risks that AI poses, especially to marginalized communities.

Apply today! Applications for Spelman on the Hill 2025 are open through noon today, September 17!

Spelman on the Hill is a unique, curated program designed to allow Spelman College students to engage directly with policymakers on Capitol Hill. The program aims to empower students with the skills and knowledge needed to advocate effectively for systemic change and to influence public policy.

Transportation, lodging and meals are fully covered for selected participants. Spelman on the Hill will occur in either March or April; the specific dates will be determined following the 2024 Presidential election.

This weekend! The Silence The Shame University (STSU) Fest, presented in partnership with Morehouse College and the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD), will be hosted by Silence the Shame on Saturday, September 21, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Morehouse College (830 Westview Dr. SW, Atlanta, GA 30314).

The summit will provide essential tools and resources for managing mental health and suicide prevention through engaging workshops, insightful panel discussions and interactive wellness activities. Attendees will also have the chance to explore exciting career pathways in the behavioral health industry.

Alumnae Highlights

The Spelman College community mourns the loss of Tina McElroy Ansa, C'71, who passed away on September 10, 2024.

Ansa was more than a novelist, publisher, filmmaker, teacher, and journalist — she was a cultural icon who wove the rich tapestry of the Southern experience into the fabric of American literature.
