As we prepare for the upcoming semester, Spelman COVID-19 Operations has released its Fall 2022 COVID-19 Health and Safety Guidance.

Since 2020, the Spelman community has embraced a culture of compliance with protocols, evident through relatively low on-campus COVID-19 positivity rates over the past two years. As the spread of COVID-19 persists and subsequent variants emerge, COVID-19 Operations hopes that the revised guidance and protocols – influenced by research and information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and localized data specific to the AUC community – will allow Spelman students, alumnae, faculty, staff and visitors to stay safe and healthy as they continue to navigate this pandemic.

Available via Spelman’s COVID Path Forward website, the multipage document is available to the public to save and print for reference. Highlights of the new guidance include a shift from compliance to personal responsibility, updated at-home self-testing and on-campus testing guidance and important changes in isolation protocols based on exposure to and close contact with individuals who may test positive for COVID-19.

Having recently marked its 10th anniversary, Spelman’s Social Justice Fellows Program is shaping and inspiring future advocates and activists.

"…I thought it was important for students to begin to focus on what’s happening on the social and political structural levels that require such a great need for community service and civic engagement," said Cynthia Neal Spence, Ph.D., C’78, associate professor of sociology and founding director of the Social Justice Fellows Program. "And so, the Social Justice Fellows Program was founded to help students merge their intellectual interests with their social justice passions."

Founded in 2011 with its framework inspired by the Spelman tagline: "A Choice to Change the World," the program creates a space for students to explore and interrogate how individuals historically and contemporarily bring about change at the social, political and legal, and policy levels nationally and globally.

Fellows are selected annually as rising juniors and continue in the program through their senior year. In response to high student interest and limited funding, an associates cohort was added that allows more student participation in programming.

The program serves up to 15 fellows and 50 associates annually, and since its inception, about 400 students have participated as fellows or associates. Like Spelman women before them, social justice fellows are leaving a legacy of advocacy.

"I know that my intellectual growth, personal growth and career growth would not be what it is if I had not attended Spelman and if I had not been in the Social Justice Program," said social justice fellow Taylor Dews, C’2022.

"It’s Friday, so imma keep it Black, but imma keep it brief."

When Lynae Vanee Bogues, C’2016, speaks, people listen. With over 500,000 Instagram followers, Bogues is taking the social media sphere by storm with her profound, often humorous, and undeniably powerful "Parking Lot Pimpin" videos.

"The work I do with ‘Parking Lot Pimpin’ started out as a project to do something I love consistently, regardless of feedback, praise, interaction and engagement," said Bogues.

Following her time at Spelman, the NAACP Image Award nominee began her career as a high school social studies teacher but soon transitioned to the influencer space after the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020. Her love of Black history, combined with her gift for poetry, ultimately led to her passion project…and an inspired quest to change the world.

"Spelman in particular showed me what the world looked like and my propensity to change it," she said. "As an artist, my content is designed intentionally and purposely to serve others in the realm of representation, inclusivity, and amplification of voices. I’m grateful I can be an example of Spelman taking your gifts and turning them up to 100."
