Trailblazers inspire trailblazers!
In 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison made history as the first Black woman astronaut taking a Spelman College flag to space to honor education and Black womanhood.

Her legacy continues to inspire Spelmanites like Taylor Richardson, C’2026, who was first moved by Dr. Jemison’s books as a young girl. That inspiration came full circle when the two met at Clark Atlanta University! Dr. Jemison a physician, engineer and role model paved the way for young Black women like Richardson, who now pursues her own dreams in medicine.

Alumnae Highlights

As we reflect on Women's History Month, we remember Josephine Harreld Love, C’33 — an alumna whose impact on education and the arts endures.

The granddaughter of Morehouse founder William Jefferson White, Love followed in the footsteps of her mother, Claudia Turner Harreld, C’01, one of Spelman’s first graduates and faculty members. She carried this legacy forward, teaching at Bennett College, Oakland University and the University of Michigan before enriching Detroit’s art scene through education.
