The
National Institutes of Health awarded Yonas Tekle, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, a $390,234 grant to further explore his research involving reproductive behavior in microbial amoeboids, a research program pioneered at Spelman.

The three-year grant is a renewal of a previous successful NIH grant Dr. Tekle received in 2015. In one of their publications, Dr. Tekle and his students discovered a new species, which they named Jaguars after the Spelman College mascot.

The current grant will fund his continued research “Unraveling The Mechanism Of Cryptic Sexual Cycle Development In Amoebae Using Comparative Genomics And Cytology.” The study aims to unravel the cytological and genetic evidence underlying the cryptic sexual life cycle of two amoeboids: Cochliopodium and Acanthamoeba.

‘Dimeji Togunde, Ph.D., vice provost for global education and professor of international studies, was recently elected to the International Student Exchange Programs Board of Directors.

Four prominent international education leaders were selected to join the ISEP Board for a 3-year term.

"I am deeply honored to serve on the Board of Directors of ISEP Study Abroad. I have always been impressed with ISEP's strong leadership and commitment to internationalization,” said Dr. Togunde. “I look forward to working with colleagues on the board whose integrity and dedication to advancing the frontiers of international education is demonstrated year after year by ISEP's impact in the field.”

ISEP’s Board of Directors consists of university presidents and faculty members, senior leaders in international education, non-profit and business leaders dedicated to ISEP’s core values.

Currently, the field of international education is in a dicey time in history due to the pandemic,” said Dr. Togunde. “I look forward to bringing perspectives that will shape the future of ISEP through new programs and generate new resources to ensure the ongoing viability of the organization.”
Campus Highlights

Mark Lee, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, shared his perspective on the lack of diverse voices in college biology textbooks in a recent article for ScienceNews.com.

In the article, “College Biology Textbooks Still Portray  World of White Scientists,” Dr. Lee pointed out that textbooks are written from a very white perspective.

Increasing diverse perspectives in science through textbooks is not the solution, said Dr. Lee.

“But they can certainly be better. Publishers could make sure they have representation that is diverse on the writing team,” he noted. "
