A $5 million grant from Mastercard will support the forthcoming Center for Black Entrepreneurship.

Established in partnership with the Black Economic Alliance Foundation, and located on the campuses of Spelman and Morehouse Colleges, the CBE will serve as an incubator for high-potential Black-owned start-ups, and a new generation of Black entrepreneurial talent.

The grant will fund new adjunct faculty, the creation of an online entrepreneurship program and support the development of experiential courses that will enable students to put their classroom instruction into practice.

"We are excited by the possibility of building an entrepreneurship curriculum within our outstanding department of economics" said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman. "Through the support of Mastercard, the College will be able to build curricular and co-curricular strength that encourages and supports AUC students intent on the creation and sustainability of new businesses, which will ultimately create wealth within our communities."

The philanthropic funding, delivered by the Mastercard Impact Fund, is part of its $500 million, five-year commitment to advance racial equity and economic opportunity through city programs to support Black communities, affordable financial tools and services and expanding access to capital and resources for Black-owned businesses.

Following a nationwide search, Monmouth University has named Pamela Scott-Johnson, C’ 82, Ph.D., as their new provost.

Dr. Scott-Johnson, who also serves as senior vice president for academic affairs, is the University’s first Black provost.

Dr. Scott-Johnson spent ten years on the faculty at Spelman. Prior to arriving at Monmouth, she served as the dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences at California State University, Los Angeles.

In her new role, she has one goal in mind: to help students better understand how their skills and talents will translate into future economies.

"I look forward to partnering with faculty to advance Monmouth University’s tradition of excellence in teaching, and engaging students to become co-creators of knowledge," she said. "Together, we will design an exciting and innovative curriculum that helps all of our students have clarity about how their skills, gifts and talents fit into the new economy."
