Good morning, Spelman community.
These past few days have been challenging to say the least. This storm has brought uncertainty and disruption to all our lives, especially to our academic program and living conditions. Thankfully, no major damage has occurred to our campus. I know the resilience of Spelman and that we will remain undaunted. We’ve faced challenges before, and together, we will overcome whatever challenges this storm brings as well.
Below are some key updates related to the storm and how we’re supporting you:
Current Situation:
Hurricane Helene has been downgraded to Tropical Storm Helene. And while the rainfall may lessen across our area, gusty winds may persist throughout the afternoon. There is still a chance of power outages, downed power lines, and flooding in certain areas. That’s why I’m asking those who don’t have to be outside to stay indoors. If you must venture out, please proceed with caution. Our campus remains closed today with all student activities canceled.
Dining Services Update:
- We will offer a hot brunch from 10 a.m.-2:00 p.m. today in the Upshaw main cafeteria.
- A hot dinner will also be available in the Upshaw main cafeteria from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.
- We expect regular dining services to resume on Saturday. We’ll send an update if this changes.
Support Services:
- For Residential Students:
- If you are a residential student, please report any broken windows, excess water, and
housekeeping concerns to Facilities Management & Services (FMS) at 404-270-5440. Your Resident Advisor or Resident Director will also be available to respond to your questions.
- Public Safety has remained on campus throughout this storm. If you have a campus emergency, please contact them at 404-565-6401.
- For Commuter and Off-Campus Students:
- Please continue to follow the safety protocols from your residence location or apartment complex and report any concerns directly to the appropriate source.
- For those commuter or off-campus students who faced an emergency due to the hurricane, the student emergency fund application will open this Monday at 9 a.m. and close Tuesday at 4 p.m. More details will be sent to you by the Dean of Students.
Communication Channels: We will continue to provide updates through email, Spelman.edu, and where an emergency exists, through Spelman Alerts. If you haven’t received Spelman Alert messages
this week, please click here to register.
And finally, I’d like to say thank you to our dedicated staff and faculty for their support and resilience during Tropical Storm Helene. Having a hurricane that shares my name gives me even more motivation to make sure we minimize the harm and that this be an experience whose impact is short-lived. Thank you for all your efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. You are proof that together we are stronger than any storm.
Continue to stay safe and look out for one another!
Sincerely,
President Helene Gayle
