Spelman College earned several top spots on the U.S. News & World Report 2022 Best Colleges list.

For the 15th consecutive year, Spelman earned the distinction of being the No.1 historically Black college or university in the country and ranked No. 54 on the list of Best National Liberal Arts institutions, up from No. 57 in 2020.

In addition, the College placed No. 4 on the list of Top Performers in Social Mobility, for the second year in a row, two places up from its debut on the list at No. 6 in 2020.

"The recognition that our undergraduate teaching and academic innovation contribute to the social mobility of our graduates is important as we strengthen programs and develop new initiatives that provide students with the competitive advantage they need to be successful in this 21st century environment," said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman.

Additional rankings include No.7 on the list of Most Innovative Schools, No. 9 on the list of Learning Communities, No. 21 on the list of Service Learning and No. 33 on the list for Study Abroad.

"Student success is a critical measure of college outcomes. We appreciate U.S. News & World Report’s recognition of Spelman’s ability to have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of our students," said Dr. Campbell.

Due to the current surge in local and statewide positivity rates, as well as the high transmissibility of the delta variant, even in vaccinated individuals, the College will now require vaccinated individuals to take one weekly rapid test on campus beginning the week of Monday, Sept. 13, 2021.

These tests will help the College continuously screen the campus population to determine the likelihood of community spread.

In addition to the weekly rapid testing of all faculty, staff and students, the College will also perform randomized PCR diagnostic testing each week of randomly selected faculty, staff and students.

Only 65 employees and 246 students will be tested with the PCR test each week. This testing will begin Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2021. Only those contacted directly by Human Resources (employees) or Student Health Services (students) via e-mail will participate in this testing.

Glennis Matthews, C’97, is the newly appointed superintendent of The Learning Center for the Deaf in Framingham, Massachusetts.

Matthews, who is also deaf, is the first Black woman to head a school for the deaf in the United States, and the first graduate of a historically Black college or university to achieve such a milestone. Being the first, she said, is not only special for her but also deaf students of color.

"They need more representation and to have someone to represent them when making decisions," she said. "Also, they need to have someone to look up to who inspires them, too. My students inspire me so much, and I’m hoping I inspire them back."

A doctoral candidate in educational leadership at Clark Atlanta University, Matthews' career goal is to implement an early literacy curriculum for deaf and hard-of-hearing children.
