Yesterday, Spelman College announced a $5 million grant from Google.org, Google’s charitable arm, to the College’s Center of Excellence for Minority Women in STEM (Center of Excellence) to support the development of a comprehensive data dashboard that will help shape the narrative of the impact of Black women leading, working and studying in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. The dashboard will also scale to include the impact of women who are Indigenous and Latina. This is the largest single grant that Google.org has awarded to support a project focused on women of color in STEM.

In addition to the grant, Google.org will provide a team of Google.org Fellows – Google engineers, product managers, UX researchers and designers – who will work with Spelman on a full time, pro bono basis to help build the data dashboard.

"We are thankful for this generous contribution from Google.org, which will support our ability to continue Spelman’s long history of recognizing and nurturing the contributions of women of color in STEM," said Helene Gayle, M.D., MPH., president of Spelman College. "Black women continue to play pivotal roles in various scientific disciplines. Being able to effectively document those efforts will strengthen our ability to elevate and value the voices, research, and intersectional experiences of these women."

Last week, Spelman College recognized winners of the Spelman+Braven Leadership Accelerator’s 2022 Spring Capstone Challenge during a special ceremony with Spelman President Helene D. Gayle, M.D., MPH, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and leaders from the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Three cohorts presented their winning proposals during the program.

The challenge tasked students to find a solution for how the Metro Atlanta Chamber can retain Atlanta University Center graduates in the Metro Atlanta region. Through a five-week experience in the Spelman+Braven Leadership Accelerator course, students used their educational and qualitative experiences – along with the defined thinking process – to develop refreshing solutions to realistic, complex problems.

From groundbreaking app ideas to thoughtful internship programs, the Braven Capstone Challenge presentation highlighted the creativity of Spelman students. Dickens also emphasized the integral role Spelman plays in making Atlanta one of the best cities in the nation.

After more than a two-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Spelman College opened its gates to receive alumnae and special guests for this year’s Homecoming experience. Attendees poured in from all over the country to enjoy a weekend filled with sisterhood and reconnection. The theme for this year’s festivities was "Forever Blue" – a loving reminder to alumnae that Spelman is a forever home, no matter where you go.

"Homecoming 2022 really lived up to our theme: Forever Blue. Despite the two-year hiatus, our alumnae, students, faculty/staff, parents and friends came together in a mighty force showing that the love we have for Spelman College will never diminish," said Linda Patton, C’88, director of Alumnae Operations at Spelman. "This was a Homecoming that will certainly be noted in our history – Forever Blue!"

The week’s lineup of celebrations included a few new events, including a gospel concert and a Spirit Day Social for faculty and staff. Most notably, Spelman’s Golden Girls from the classes of 1970 and 1971 reunited for a special brunch, attended the closing worship service together, and took a class photo on the steps of Sisters Chapel and at the Arch with their class flags. Since the classes were forced to celebrate their reunion virtually at the height of the pandemic, these moments during the homecoming festivities were particularly treasured.

Additional campus events included a Lavender Brunch, created to serve as a space of community and support for LGBTQIA students, alumnae, faculty, staff and allies. The College celebrated the Class of '73 (and earlier) with a Diamond Daughter and Golden Girl Chat and Chew. The Spelman College Parents Association also held a breakfast to welcome parents of current students. In addition, alumnae were welcomed back to campus during the Welcome Home Check-In and the Welcome Home Day Party held in the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art – an opportunity for both Spelman and Morehouse College alumni to celebrate together.

Marking a memorable return to in-person festivities, Spelman College Homecoming 2022 was truly one for the record books.
