For Spelman alumnae, there's no place like home! United by sisterhood, the community is stronger together. This year, alumnae are invited to participate in virtual homecoming festivities that commemorate the strength of Spelman's legacy.

Under the theme, "Stronger Together: A Forever Sisterhood," the week kicks-off at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 10, with an opening worship service led by Rev. Allison Henderson-Brooks, C'2008, associate minister of Providence Missionary Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA.

On Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 5 p.m., Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman, will deliver a Homecoming Welcome and State of the College address.

"Homecoming is a time within the academic year when we pause to gather, reminisce and celebrate. Like last year, organizers are committed to ensuring that the magic of homecoming remains," said Dr. Campbell in a letter to the community.

Beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 16, Spelman sisters and Morehouse brothers will join a Virtual Tailgate Experience complete with interactive demos, fellowship and entertainment.

Student Researchers Benefit From Enrichment Programs

Psychology professor A. Nayena Blankson, Ph.D., led two summer programs designed to enhance the experiences of collegiate researchers.

Funded by the National Science Foundation the INSPIRE U2 and RISE programs were both designed to help prepare underrepresented researchers for careers in the sciences.

"From research on COVID-19 to STIs, the student projects and presentations were truly impressive," said Dr. Blankson. "To see what students are able to accomplish inspires me to continue to seek opportunities to provide these types of experiences."

Ayobami Fawole, C’2023, a biology major who participated in the summer RISE program, said the program challenged her.

"I was motivated to make the most of my summer," she said. "I learned time management, communication, critical thinking, data analysis and many other skills that will enhance my undergraduate research experiences. Moving forward with the RISE program, I hope to enhance the skills I’ve learned and carry them with me when I start a graduate program."

Gia Taijae Tejeda, C’2023, was among four students from historically Black colleges and universities recognized by ESSENCE Magazine as student entrepreneurs to watch.

An economics major, with a minor in management and organization, Tejeda founded All Things College, an advocacy group focused on helping African American families understand the importance of higher education.

This year Tejeda was a member of a team of Spelman students that won $1 million during the Goldman Sachs Market Madness case-study competition.

Love-Leigh Trimiew, C’2003, recently  launched HellaBlack, an e-commerce company for Black retailers and enthusiasts.

The  community-curated, online marketplace was
created to offer a one-stop destination to find quality Black-owned products with a focus on and appreciation for sought-after brands and products from around the Diaspora.

Growing up in a household of passionate women entrepreneurs ignited her relentless pursuit to empower others, Trimiew said.

"I want companies, families, and organizations to thrive in our community and produce generational wealth," she said. "For us, that starts by organizing a place where consumers can spend their dollars in the community."
