Congratulations to President Helene Gayle, who was recently awarded the 2023 Shaw-Hardy Taylor Achievement Award in recognition of her leadership in philanthropy and efforts to advance gender and racial equity.President Gayle was presented with the award during the 2023 Symposium: All In, All Rise on March 28-29, in Chicago, Illinois.To read more, visit Spelman’s News and Events page.
The Spelman College Chemistry and Biochemistry Department will host its biennial Elements of Distinction Scholarship Symposium virtually on Thursday, April 6, from 5-6 p.m. ET.

During the symposium, the department will award its top junior and sophomore students with a $2500 cash prize – The Gladys S. Bayse Memorial Academic Scholarship in honor of the late Gladys Bayse, Ph.D, the first Chemistry and Biochemistry Department chairperson and a professor of biochemistry. In addition, Sandra Watson, Ph.D., C’2011, will serve as speaker.

Founders Week 2023 is in full swing! Spelman College recently received a $5 million grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.The grant is one of four from the Foundation totaling more than $20 million to academic institutions that historically serve diverse student populations to support the launch and expansion of interdisciplinary cyber policy programs.To read more, visit Spelman’s News and Events page.

On March 23, President Gayle sat down with Kim Godwin, president of ABC News, for the academic year’s third installment of the "Courageous Conversations: Black in the C-Suite" series.

The conversation covered everything from Godwin’s appreciation for her own Historically Black College and University (HBCU) experience at Florida A&M University to her love of sneaker collecting – offering attendees an honest glimpse of her journey through the broadcast media industry to ultimately making history as the first Black woman to lead a major broadcast news network.

On March 28, the Spelman community and its stakeholders marked the conclusion of the Spelman College Ascends Campaign with a virtual celebration, featuring President Helene Gayle, M.D., MPH, Spelman College Board Chair Rosalind Gates Brewer, C’84, and President Emerita Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.

Launched in 2017 with the goal of raising $250 million to cover student fees, improve technological infrastructure, build the Center for Innovation & Arts, and expand various initiatives across campus, the Spelman College Ascends Campaign is the largest comprehensive campaign in the College’s history – ultimately raising $339 million for the College.
