The President’s Safety Net Scholarship, an initiative launched in 2008 by President Emerita Dr. Beverly D. Tatum, provides critical financial assistance to high-achieving upperclassmen across academic disciplines. Global financial services company BNY has been one of the biggest supporters of the President’s Safety Fund, contributing $1.5 million to date.
Over the last three years, this generous support has enabled Spelman to award $850,000 in financial aid to 189 students, typically addressing unmet needs ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 per student.

The celebrated performance will air on WABE on Sunday, December 22, at 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 24, at 8 p.m. and Wednesday, December 25, at 9:30 p.m.

In October, Southface Institute leadership toured Spelman College’s historic campus with Arthur Frazier (director of Facilities Management & Services), Iesha Baldwin (sustainability coordinator) and Karringtyn Johnson, C'2026 (student associate).
Spelman College is a sustainability leader among Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and has made great strides in green building construction, energy efficiency and campus engagement with sustainability.
The tour focused on understanding the college’s new construction and sustainable operations progress along with discovering strategies to support student sustainability initiatives and operations and maintenance (O&M) best practices with the BIT Building platform.

Welcome, Barbara! Barbara Chirinos, a dynamic force in the arts and cultural sectors, recently joined Spelman College as the inaugural artistic director of the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation and the Arts (CI&A) and the LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Center for the Performing Arts.
With a career spanning over three decades, Chirinos has made her mark through groundbreaking programs, cultural preservation and advocacy for underrepresented voices.

Mark your calendars! The 2025-2026 academic year housing selection process will begin on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
Because interest in on-campus housing exceeds the number of beds available, not all students who want to live on campus will be able to do so. The Spelman College Office of Housing & Residence Life urges students and families to start the planning process now.

Congratulations, Blair! Spelman College student Blair Moore, C’2027, was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Secoriea Turner Social Justice Scholarship.
The scholarship is named in honor of 8-year-old Secoriea Turner, who was shot and killed during protests in 2020.

Applications close soon! Spelpreneur Spring 2025 Cohort applications are open now through Friday, January 17, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Spelpreneur is a co-curricular education initiative that fosters entrepreneurship and innovation at Spelman College. Spelpreneur educates, inspires and empowers students. It is open to all current Spelman students.
The 2025 spring semester will run from January 21 - March 18, 2025. Spelpreneur sessions are on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. unless communicated differently.

Three (3) winning students will be selected to receive a $10,000 scholarship, which will be paid directly to their school for the upcoming academic year. UNCF will also conduct a second round of the contest in the spring semester to select three (3) additional winners.
The contest is open to all full-time students at any of our UNCF-member institutions. Submissions must be received by December 20, 2024. Winners will be announced January 27, 2025.

Well done, Michelle! Alumna Michelle Bailey, C'89, recently celebrated the 2nd Annual HBCU Honors award show.
Bailey, who serves as founder and executive producer of H BCU Honors, developed the event as a way to showcase alums of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) who represent the crème-de-la-crème of Black Excellence across various industries.
