The Spelman College Glee Club will perform during “Return to Community: A Sunday Gospel Jazz Service"on Sunday, June 29, 2025, in Syracuse, New York.

This exciting program, which will also feature performances by The Black Celestial Choral Ensemble (BCCE) of Syracuse University and a community choir comprised of Syracuse-area residents, will offer a dynamic and inclusive spiritual experience that fuses and celebrates gospel and jazz music.

Recently, Spelman College partnered with Black Women Film Network to host a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) Fireside Chat featuring the editor, director and lead actress of Marvel’s newest series Ironheart.

During the fireside chat, Editor and Clark Atlanta University alumna Deanna Nowell and Director Angela Barnes shared behind-the-scenes insights, career journeys and the power of storytelling in celebration of a series powered by Black women both behind the camera and on screen.

Faculty & Staff Highlights

Congratulations, Dr. Johnson! This year, the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM) will launch the very first New Century Award for Organ, a landmark initiative that reflects their deep commitment to supporting young artists who pursue excellence in organ performance.

In a heartfelt tribute to Joyce Finch Johnson, D.Mus., the organization's second-place award proudly bears her name in celebration of her artistry, leadership, and legacy.

As Spelman's organist for nearly seven decades and the first Black woman to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Northwestern University, Dr. Johnson has not only broken barriers but also inspired countless musicians through her performances and pedagogy.

Alumnae Highlights

Well done, Phylicia! Alumna Phylicia Fant, C’2000, recently received The New Guard Award at the Black Women in Music Dinner.

A visionary leader in the entertainment industry, Fant continues to amplify Black voices and push culture forward.
