Cisco recently announced a partnership with the Black Economic Alliance Foundation to make a significant investment in Black entrepreneurship with a $5 million commitment. The gift commits $4 million to support technical services for the Center for Black Entrepreneurship’s (CBE) development, and $1 million for Spelman’s Black Economic Alliance Entrepreneurs Fund.

"We're proud to be a partner in launching the Center for Black Entrepreneurship, a collaborative effort that will help prepare tomorrow's visionary entrepreneurial leaders," said Spelman College President Helene Gayle, MD, MPH. "Black women have been the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs, and Spelman College has had a rich history of developing Black female entrepreneurs that are making their mark on the world. We are grateful for the commitment from Cisco that will continue to fuel our entrepreneurial legacy well into the future."

The CBE program – currently housed at Spelman and Morehouse Colleges – will also partner with Clark Atlanta University to launch and develop graduate programming.

Given the ever-changing nature of the COVID-19 virus, Spelman COVID-19 Operations has recently updated the semester’s campus health and safety guidance.

COVID-19 Testing Updates

Unvaccinated community members are no longer required to perform mandatory weekly self-tests. Instead, random community testing will be conducted every other week, twice per month. Via this testing method, randomly selected vaccinated and unvaccinated community members (students, faculty and staff) who are selected to participate in the community testing will receive an email notification from Spelman COVID-19 Operations with specific testing information. This randomized testing occurs in the BDT Suites Private Dining Room.

COVID-19 Exposure Guidance Updates

If you were exposed to COVID-19 or have been told by a healthcare provider or public health official that you were in close physical contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19, the steps you should take have changed. Regardless of your vaccination status:

  • Do not need to quarantine and may continue normal activity if COVID-19 negative.
  • You must wear a KN95 mask for ten (10) days from the date of exposure.
  • You must take a rapid antigen COVID test on day one (1) and day five (5) following your exposure. You may pick up a supply of rapid at-home self-test kits in the BDT Suites Private Dining Room (Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).

If you test positive or experience symptoms consistent with COVID-19, you must follow the isolation protocol.

Campus Visitation Guidance Updates

At this time, there are no entry requirements for guests when the CDC COVID-19 Community Indicator is low or medium. However, all Spelman College guests must adhere to the mandatory indoor masking advisory. Visitors are encouraged to use the CDC COVID-19 Community Indicator to check community COVID-19 levels for Fulton County, Georgia, before coming to campus.

When COVID-19 community transmission is HIGH, visitors will be advised to take a rapid COVID test and complete a Visitor COVID-19 Attestation Form prior to arriving on campus. Visitors will not be required to submit results but must acknowledge that they will adhere to the pre-arrival testing precautions and campus masking advisory. On-site testing of guests will not be offered on campus.

Students, faculty and staff of AUCC institutions are not considered visitors and may continue to access the campus with proper identification.

Spelman COVID-19 Operations asks that all community members be personally responsible by self-monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms, not coming to campus if symptomatic or COVID-19 positive and self-testing with an at-home rapid test as needed.

Campus Highlights

Professor Hyunjung Rachel Chung, Ph.D. last week shared her musical skills with Atlanta Ballet attendees during a special performance of Philip Glass's "Four Movements for Two Pianos" for the Atlanta Ballet's production of "In Creases" – one of three works showcasing the neoclassical style of Balanchine and its influence on today’s choreographers.

Currently serving as Music Department chair and associate professor, piano and theory, Dr. Chung has paved a multifaceted path as a performer, educator, adjudicator, recording artist and avocational composer. She made her New York solo debut at Carnegie Hall Weill Recital Hall more than two decades ago as a winner of the Artist International Audition, and since then, her solo and collaborative recitals have taken her throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Most recently, in 2020, Dr. Chung took home The American Prize Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music for her performance of My Cherished Garden: Piano music by Higdon, Zwilich, Thomas, Park and Leon.

In addition to her notable performance with the Atlanta Ballet, Dr. Chung also released a physical CD and digital albums worldwide last summer, earning her a Gold Star in the Best Piano Solo CD category at the 2022 Music & Stars Awards – an International Online Music Competition based in Barcelona, Spain.

Alumnae Highlights

As a world-renowned artist, Tendayi Kuumba, C’2010, has traveled an unpredictable road to Broadway.

Practically a lifelong dancer and performer, she often credits her Spelman experience as the foundation that allowed her to explore her creative versatility and become the quadruple threat (dancer/choreographer, vocalist and songwriter) she is today.

Kuumba’s Spelman experience also allowed her to make lifelong "SpelHouse" friends that support her today.

"I love what Spelman has been to me in terms of a sisterhood, as a HBCU family, as a community," she said. "They don’t always think of HBCUs in the arts community, but there are many of us out here supporting each other."

Since her time at Spelman, Kuumba has worked with artists such as Spike Lee, David Byrne and the Urban Bush Women. She has also appeared in films showcased at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and via HBO Max. She currently serves as the co-coordinator for The Golden Ratio Project in Brooklyn, New York.
