Spelman is teaming up with SMASH, a STEM nonprofit focused on addressing inequities in education, to offer programming and support to young women of color interested in academic and professional careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The inaugural SMASH x Spelman program will include a cohort of 25 high school students who will have the opportunity to participate in multi-year immersive educational programming.

"SMASH x Spelman is coming to fruition at just the right time. As technology becomes ubiquitous across all aspects of our society, the voices, experiences, and expertise of Black women are critical to the creation of a more equitable future. A future where technology is leveraged for the empowerment of all. Programs like SMASH x Spelman will remind our young people that they are the ones creating that future and equip them with the tools to do so with compassion," said Tamara Pearson, director of the Center of Excellence for Minority Women in STEM at Spelman.

Interested applicants who are entering the ninth grade as of fall 2022 and meet the program criteria can apply now by visiting smash.org/apply.

The deadline for applications is March 1, 2022.

Lybra Clemons, C'95, chief diversity, inclusion and belonging officer at Twilio, was recently featured on Make It CNBC.com for her work to build a more diverse workforce.

In the article titled "The difference between DEI and anti-racism at work, according to the diversity chief of a $37 billion company," Clemons discusses how Spelman prepared her to champion the development of  equitable spaces in corporate America.

"At Spelman, I felt like I was unapologetically who I am," Clemons told CNBC.com. "When you’re in a community with all kinds of Black women, you have the comfort of being who you are and feeling very justified in your presence. And I take that with me wherever I go."
