On May 21, 2024, Spelman College welcomed President of the Republic of Kenya Dr. William Samoei Ruto during his first state visit to the United States.

During the visit, Spelman, the Kenyan government and other Historically Black College and University leaders signed an agreement to support new partnerships between universities and industry to drive innovation, research and job growth in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related fields in Kenya and globally.

As the health care industry faces a growing shortage of health care workers, Spelman College and Advocate Health are collaborating to introduce more students to a range of critical health care careers.

Over the past two years, Spelman has teamed up with Advocate Health, the nation’s third-largest nonprofit health system, to connect students who aspire to work in medicine with mentorship and career discernment opportunities.

Congratulations, Anjanette! Senior Lecturer of the Spelman College Documentary Filmmaking Program Anjanette Levert's latest project, The Only Doctor, recently premiered via the PBS program, REEL SOUTH.

Produced by Levert, the documentary follows the only doctor in rural Clay County, Georgia, one of the state’s poorest and unhealthiest counties.

Congratulations, Jasmine!
Recent Spelman graduate, Jasmine Mann, C'2024, was selected as a finalist for the 2024 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs.

As a finalist, she will spend the summer learning Russian in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Mann's introduction to Russian and Kyrgyz culture began during her sophomore year at Spelman College through the Russian Critical Language Spark initiative.
Alumnae Highlights

Well done, Shayna! Multi-generational entrepreneur and Spelman alumna Shayna Atkins, C'2010, is now leading the third-fastest-growing company in the Midwest and the fastest in Illinois of 2024, according to Inc. Magazine.

She credits her interest in entrepreneurship to her mother, who owned several businesses on the West Side of Chicago in the early 1990s.

Congratulations, Alexis and Neema! Spelman alumnae Alexis Jacobs and Neema Griffin, C’2023, walked different paths, but both ended up with the same unique goal to earn their drone pilot licenses.
