T
oday, Spelman College announced guidance for spring 2021 to provide students and their families time to plan and prepare for the second semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. The College shared its intentions for a low density, hybrid model when classes are scheduled to resume on Monday, Feb. 1, 2021.

Spelman is prepared to adjust their mode of operation, including continuing with fully remote learning, should the pandemic not improve based on data from public health organizations.

The plan includes the number of students and faculty and staff members on campus remaining low for the spring semester, with roughly 350 students occupying the College’s residence halls. To support the students, there will be a select number of faculty and staff members on campus for a total population that is about 30 percent of the College’s normal operating capacity.

Students who reside on campus may select to enroll in both in-person and virtual classes. Those not on campus will continue to learn remotely.

The decision is informed by science, data analysis, public health guidance and the needs of the Spelman community, said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., Spelman’s president, in a letter to the community.

"Our plans are based on Spelman’s ability to monitor several health metrics, our faith that our community will adhere to health and safety protocols and the knowledge that we may need to pivot back to remote learning if the data worsens. We are moving cautiously so that we can begin the process of reuniting some students, and faculty and staff members in a safe residential, classroom and community environment," said Dr. Campbell.

More information on the College’s Path Forward will be made available on Spelman.edu.

In recognition of her long and storied career
at Coca-Cola, the Coca-Cola Foundation has established a scholarship at Spelman in honor of Helen Smith Price, C79, who is a trustee of the College.

The Helen Smith Price, C’79, Endowed Finish Line Scholarship will provide financial assistance to help high achieving students successfully complete their experience at Spelman.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors who are in good academic standing are eligible for the need-based scholarships, which are supported by the Coca-Cola Foundation through a gift to Spelman.

"
This is a special gift named in honor of an alumna and servant leader whose dynamic career in corporate philanthropy has an impact globally and in metro Atlanta communities, including those neighborhoods surrounding her alma mater," said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman, about Price, who retired last week from Coca Cola after 27 years of service.

"Spelman is laser focused on reducing debt for our graduates. Through generous support from The Coca-Cola Foundation celebrating our beloved trustee, students will reach the end of their undergraduate journey with one less barrier between them and their bright futures as change agents, who will undoubtedly follow in Helen’s footsteps.
Peloton and Beyoncé Offer the Gift of Fitness to Spelman Students

Peloton, the world's leading interactive fitness platform, and GRAMMY® Award-winning global entertainer and entrepreneur Beyoncé have teamed up to gift Spelman students a two-year Peloton Digital Membership.

The membership will allow all currently enrolled Spelman students unlimited access to live and on-demand classes from world class instructors, like yoga teacher and Spelman alumna Chelsea Jackson Roberts, Ph.D., C’2001, who teaches Beyoncé themed yoga flow and meditation classes on the Peloton app.

"My intention is to create an environment that leaves members with a strong sense of belonging and accomplishment," said Dr. Jackson Roberts, the founder of Spelman’s Yoga, Literature and Art Camp, who, after receiving her Ph.D. in educational studies, made it her life's work to study the positive impact that yoga has on communities.  "I am inspired by how yoga, music and soulful storytelling can take us on a journey closer to ourselves."

Peloton and Beyoncé gifted 2-year digital memberships to students enrolled in nine other HBCUs, including Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine.
