Spelman College, a global leader in the education of women of African descent, has been designated as an Opportunity College and University by the Carnegie Classifications.

The designation recognizes Spelman as an institution that can serve as a model for studying how campuses can foster student success.

Academy Award nominated actress Taraji P. Henson will be the speaker for Spelman College’s 138th Commencement Ceremony, on May 18, and will receive a Doctor of Fine Arts honorary degree.

Dr. Thema Bryant will address the Class of 2025 during the Baccalaureate Ceremony on May 17.

A truly grand opening!
Spelman College is pleased to announce the opening of the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation & the Arts.

The new building designed by Studio Gang, the international architecture and urban design firm led by Jeanne Gang, will provide students at the historically Black college with a cross-disciplinary and collaborative learning environment.

Join Spelman College as we proudly honor the vibrant contributions and achievements of our LGBTQIA+ and ally graduates at this year’s Lavender Graduation Ceremony a heartfelt celebration of identity, community and accomplishment on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby, Ed.D. Academic Center Auditorium.

This special evening brings together faculty, staff, students, alumnae, graduates and the entire AUC community for a joyful and affirming celebration filled with love, recognition and pride.

Join the VP&I Program, Student Success and REI Co-op for a magical night of studying and sleeping under the stars from Friday, May 2, at 6 p.m. to Saturday, May 3, at 10 a.m.

REI will provide tents, cots and lounge chairs. Food and snacks will also be provided. You may bring your pillow, blanket and study materials. Organizers will provide 20 tents, with two sleepers per tent.

Registration is required to attend.

Student Highlights

Well done, KyChelle! KyChelle Barnes, C'2027, a transfer student and chemistry major with a concentration in cosmetic chemistry from Detroit, Michigan, credits her Spelpreneur experience with helping her find community and connection at Spelman.

Through Spelpreneur, KyChelle gained insight into the legal, networking and marketing aspects of business. In the near future, Barnes plans to apply her new skills to support her mother’s business and growing her own venture with partner Annavae Noel.

Alumnae Highlights

Congratulations, Amy! Alumna Amy Laster, Ph.D., C'97, was recently named as chief scientific officer of The Foundation Fighting Blindness, the driving force in the global development of treatments and cures for blinding diseases.

A highly accomplished neuroscientist by training, Dr. Laster has conducted significant research on neuroregeneration following acute injury and the causes of neurological monogenic diseases.
