Campus Highlights


Sisterhood starts at Spelman!
Camp HBCYouth is hosting its first ever all-girls experience at Spelman College allowing the young participants to step into sisterhood and soak up the legacy around them.

The educational minority youth summer day camp based on the principles and values of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) offers boys and girls an early start on the HBCU journey.

This year's participating colleges and universities include Spelman College, Tennessee State University, Clark University and Morehouse College, with additional sponsorship from the AJ Terrell Foundation.

Faculty & Staff Highlights

Spelman’s economics professor Angelino Viceisza, Ph.D. has been nominated for a top position within the American Economic Association (AEA).

According to AEA records dating back to 1958, Dr. Viceisza is the first person to be nominated for the AEA Executive Committee while concurrently serving as an HBCU faculty member.

Student Highlights

Mallory Childs, C’2028, recently immersed herself in Florence through the course “Globalization Italy: The Case of Florence.”

From exploring the contributions of Africans and African Americans to Italian history to connecting historical narratives to modern culture, Mallory gained a deeper understanding of race, identity and global intersections.

Alumnae Highlights

Congratulations, Genesis! Alumna Judge Genesis Draper, C'99, was recently named chief public defender of Harris County, Texas marking a milestone as the first African American and the first woman to hold the position since the Public Defender’s Office was established in 2010.

Currently serving as judge of Harris County Criminal Court at Law No. 12, she will officially begin the transition to her new role in July 2025.
