Spelman College will kick-off its popular virtual series, Courageous Conversations: Black in the C-Suite, with Thasunda Brown Duckett, president and chief executive officer of TIAA, at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 9.

Duckett will join Spelman President Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., to discuss her professional and personal journey.

As TIAA’s CEO, Duckett leads the Fortune 100 company whose mission is defined by financial inclusion and opportunity – goals and values she has upheld throughout her career. She joined TIAA after serving as CEO of Chase Consumer Banking, where she oversaw a banking network with more than $600 billion in deposits and 50,000 employees.

Duckett, who also serves on the boards of NIKE, Inc., Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and the National Medal of Honor Museum, is the founder of the Rosie and Otis Brown Foundation. The foundation honors her parents and recognizes and rewards people who use ordinary means to empower and uplift their community in extraordinary ways.

Angelino Viceisza, Ph.D., associate professor of economics, and Danielle Dickens, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, received a $632,515 National Science Foundation lead grant to help further diversify the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

The "Boosting Applications and Awards by MSIs!" project will provide faculty at minority serving institutions more time to develop proposals for submission to NSF. James Poterba, professor of economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the president of the National Bureau of Economic Research, is a co-investigator.

BAM! will provide faculty at MSIs with a course release to develop their proposals. Typically, course releases are provided after a grant is awarded. By providing a course release before the grant is awarded, MSI faculty are afforded sufficient time to work on the proposal, Dr. Viceisza explained.

"We hope that the combination of extra time to develop a proposal and intensive mentoring from faculty who are well versed in the proposal preparation process, will improve MSI faculty’s funding from NSF and other agencies," said Dr. Viceisza. "In the long run, this will contribute to broadening participation in STEM."

Dr. Yan Xu Named eSpelman Program Director

Spelman has named Yan Xu, Ph.D., assistant professor and chair of history, program director of the College’s eSpelman online.

Sharon L. Davies, provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, made the announcement Monday, August 16.

As director, Dr. Xu will help lead the development of e-Spelman programming and support the development of certificate programs designed specifically for working adult learners.

"After teaching online courses during the pandemic, Dr. Xu developed a strong curiosity about online education pedagogies, practices and technologies," said Davies in an announcement to the campus community. "That curiosity drove her to take all of the online teaching workshops provided by Spelman College, as well as coursework offered by external partners, including Arizona State University and the Gardner Institute."

Alumna Wins Award to Support Startup

A Spelman alumna and former student trustee received a $100,000 award from Pharrell Williams' Black Ambition Prize to support her startup company.

Mya Havard, C’2017, will use the funds to support Shea.d. Currently in demo phase, Shea.d is designed to enhance Black buying power by helping shoppers find products they already use being sold by Black entrepreneurs.

During her time at Spelman, the former mathematics major and computer science minor served on the board of trustees from 2014 to 2017.

After graduating from Spelman, Havard obtained a Master of Management Science and Engineering degree from Stanford University. She is currently a product manager at Twitter.

The Black Ambition Prize, which is in its first year, provides a platform for eligible entrepreneurs to access growth capital, pitch feedback and mentorship.
