Homecoming at Spelman College was a star-studded affair as the College celebrated the official opening of the newly renovated LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Performing Arts Center on Thursday, October 24.

LaTanya, C’71, and Sam, Morehouse ’72, were joined by family, Hollywood A-listers and the Spelman community to dedicate the center and unveil a mural highlighting their lifetime of achievements in the arts.

The Jacksons, who met while students at Spelman and Morehouse College, donated $5 million towards the renovation of the Rockefeller Fine Arts Building. The contribution marked the largest alumnae donation in Spelman’s history.

Campus Highlights & Events

Join us! Spelman College will host a Presidential Election Watch Party today, Tuesday, November 5, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., in the Upper and Lower Manley Center Concourses.

This event will feature Spelman College Interim President Rosalind Brewer, C'84, and special guests. V-103 will be broadcasting live from the event, and there will also be food and games to enjoy.

Attendees are asked to wear Spelman apparel, and registration is not required to attend.

It's Election Day in the AUC! Spelman College, in partnership with the Joseph & Evelyn Lowery Institute and the Georgia Alliance, is phone banking and providing rides to the polls for all current students. Shuttles will pick up Atlanta University Center (AUC) students near the College's Greensferry Entrance.

Come stroll with Dr. Holloman and Student Affairs! Spelman College Student Affairs invites the campus community to a special stroll through the West End led by Dr. Holloman and Student Affairs staff on Thursday, November 7 at 4 p.m.

This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the West End and enjoy a relaxing walk. Comfortable shoes are encouraged.

Student Highlights

Great work, Grace! Grace Barlow, C’2027, an Emmy Award-winning journalist and managing editor for The Blueprint, was recently invited to sit on a panel moderated by WABE Studios in celebration of HBCUs across the country.

Barlow, along with panelists Dr. Illya Davis, Professor of Philosophy at Morehouse College, Rev. Dr. Herman "Skip" Mason and Interim President of The Historic Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), discussed activism, the power of Black stories and the significance of HBCU Week in highlighting the importance of Black narratives.

Applications are open for the 2025 A.T.I. Summer Leadership Training! This groundbreaking 8-week training program offers an unparalleled journey for scholars and sets a new standard for experiential learning.

Backed by the White House’s HBCU Initiative, A.T.I. is an immersive blend of professional development and hands-on experience, including a transformative week in the nation's capital, where participants will engage in the heart of American political and federal systems.

The program is open to students of all academic majors and includes a competitive stipend, housing in the Atlanta University Center (AUC), a meal plan and a fully funded trip to Washington D.C.

To apply, scholars must be a current Sophomore or Junior and maintain a GPA of 2.8 or higher.

The deadline for submission is Monday, December 16, 2024. 
Alumnae Highlights

Alumna J’nelle N. Agee, C’2010, executive director of Editorial at EBONY, recently returned to Spelman College to cover this year’s Homecoming festivities and amplify the magazine’s October issue centering on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The issue’s cover features actor and Morehouse College Alumnus Brian Tyree Henry, ‘04.

"It was an honor to return home to our illustrious Spelman College to not only cover the festivities but amplify EBONY’s most recent HBCU-focused October issue," said Agee. "Spotlighting and sharing stories about [HBCUs] and the excellence they produce is a highlight of my career, and it’s a privilege for me to help EBONY in its mission to move Black forward."
