Last week, Spelman College announced an expansion of the eSpelman online learning certificate program, which focuses on in-demand career growth skills. Initially targeting working adult learners, the program is now open to all learners. Applications for the January 2023 term are available now through January 13, 2022.

In addition to the current portfolio of certificates, two new certificates – Cosmetic Science and Entrepreneurship – are now being offered. Each certificate program is designed to meet the demand for career-enhancing skills in unique areas.

"The e-Spelman program was designed to enhance our ability to reach diverse learners and offer them first-in-class programming to help increase their career mobility and earning potential," said Helene Gayle, M.D., MPH., president of Spelman College. "It is so invigorating to witness the evolution of this program and its transformative impact on individuals beyond the borders of our College."

All of the eSpelman certificates and courses are designed by Spelman College faculty members. Launched in 2021, the program delivers online education and certificates that support the upskilling and career exploration of working adult learners – and anyone who qualifies for the program.

"The eSpelman program is designed to accelerate career growth and accommodate the busy schedule of a modern-day student, including individuals regardless of their gender who have not attended college, as well as those who have attended college and desire to expand their current skills," said Ingrid Hayes, senior vice president for Enrollment Management at Spelman College.

Certificate courses are currently available in: Business Essentials, Diverse Leadership, Leading Self, Leading Others and Project Management.

With historic implications – especially in the Senate and gubernatorial races – Georgia’s 2022 midterm elections have inspired multiple efforts to get young voters educated and out to the polls.

Last week, Spelman College hosted the "Our Democracy, Our Choice" teach-in – an event organized to encourage the community to focus on democracy, rights, voting and elections. Organized by Spelman’s faculty members and student leaders from the social justice program, SGA, NAACP and non-profit organization founded by Stacey Abrams, Fair Fight, this teach-in featured "lightning presentations" (five minutes or less) portraying the perspectives from members of the community.

In addition, WABE’s political news team (Sam Gringlas, Susanna Capelouto, Rahul Bali, and Emma Hurt of Axios Atlanta) from local podcast, Georgia Votes 2022, hosted a live session from The Atlanta University Center’s (AUC) Robert W. Woodruff Library Virginia Lacy Jones Exhibition Hall to discuss the latest news on Election Day 2022.

From rides to the polls supported by local non-profit organizations to early voting access within the AUC, the focus has been clear to encourage students to exercise their right to vote.

Alumnae Spotlight

Television producer and vice president of TV at 21 Laps Entertainment, Paige Simpson, C’2009, has turned her passion for storytelling into a trailblazing career in the entertainment industry. Simpson has recently contributed to some of the most binge-worthy content to-date, such as "Stranger Things," for Netflix.

Media and production were not always a part of Simpson’s dream. Originally a biology major at Spelman College, it was during her senior year at Spelman when she received an opportunity to intern at BET with Tracy "Twinkie" Byrd and Michelle Adams. There, she played a part in casting for "Being Mary Jane," "The Start Up," "Fruitvale Station," and "Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B."

Simpson’s most recent project, "Yasuke," was purchased by Netflix. The story of a Black Samurai will further speak to her passion for promoting diversity in Hollywood a nod she often credits to her "tribe," which includes notable advocates like Nina Yang, Viola Davis, Amy Israel, Rachel Brosnahan and Forest Whitaker.
