Spelman College to Offer More Than 50 Online Summer Courses

Spelman College online summer courses give students throughout the Atlanta University Center an opportunity to stay on track with their studies during the summer months.

The first session of online courses will begin on Wednesday, June 9. An additional session will be offered beginning on Wednesday, June 16. Both sessions are currently open for enrollment.

By taking online summer courses, students are afforded the opportunity to catch up, stay on track or move ahead.

Classes are offered in three learning styles: synchronous, asynchronous, or a hybrid of both, which allows students to select the teaching model that works best for them.

Classes offered this summer include, Principles of Computing, Understanding Modern China, Theater Insight and Racism in the Law, as well as language courses including Intermediate Spanish.

Students interested in courses beginning Wednesday, June 9, have until Friday, June 4 to register. Those interested in classes starting Wednesday, June 16, have until  Friday, June 11, to enroll.

Spelman College Named Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader by U.S. Department of State

Spelman College was recently named a Fulbright Historically Black College and University Institutional Leader for the 2019-2020 academic year.

For the second consecutive year, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is recognizing the noteworthy engagement that selected HBCUs have achieved with Fulbright, the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program. Spelman is one of 20 HBCUs to receive this distinction.

Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader status was conferred on Spelman for its noteworthy support for Fulbright exchange participants during the 2019-2020 academic year, and its promotion of Fulbright program opportunities on campus.

“Spelman and Fulbright are similar in their interest in students who are curious,” said Michelle Hite, director of prestigious international fellowships and professor of English. "Like Fulbright, the College puts and emphasis on preparing students to be global leaders by making available opportunities for them to conduct research and engage in study abroad experiences."

During the 2019-2020 academic year, four Spelman graduates were selected to teach English abroad as part of the Fulbright English Assistant Program, which places scholars in schools to supplement language instruction.

Recent Graduate to Study Data Science at Harvard University

Jailyn Clark, C’2021, declared her plans to attend Spelman in 2016.

“I visited the College on Class Day as a junior in high school,” she said. “During the visit, I remember telling a Golden Girl in the class of 1966 that I planned to attend Spelman College and graduate in 2021.”

Clark achieved that goal and now the mathematics major will enroll in the Master of Science data science program at Harvard University’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

In 2018, Clark was one of 10 recipients of the Jesse Jackson Fellows-Toyota Scholarship. Since then, she has participated in Spelman’s President’s Reading Circle, served as vice president of Math Club, graduated from the Women of Excellence in Leadership Scholar program and served as secretary of the "sweet" Mu Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

“I remember fondly discussing my interest in data science with Dr. Campbell over the course of my matriculation,” said Clark. “For me, Spelman is so much more than just an institution.  Spelman is home. While I completed my degree virtually I was, and still am, grateful for the community of students, faculty and alumnae who continue to bring Spelman with them wherever they go.”
