Spelman College professor Leyte L. Winfield has been named a 2022 American Chemical Society (ACS) Fellow.

Dr. Winfield shares this distinction with a cohort of more than 40 other chemistry and science professionals who represent other respected institutions like Rutgers University and Ohio State Universities and top companies like ExxonMobil and Bristol Myers Squibb. The Fellows were recently honored this month at the ACS Fall 2022 gathering in Chicago.

The ACS is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress in efforts to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and all its people. The ACS Fellows Program was created by the ACS Board of Directors in December 2008 to recognize members of ACS for outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession and the Society.

At Spelman, Dr. Winfield is a full professor of chemistry and biochemistry and serves as Division Chair for the Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Previously, she served as chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and led the department’s efforts to broaden the curriculum to meet the ideals of a liberal arts education while simultaneously providing students with resources that promote improved engagement and performance in the majors. A medicinal chemist by trade, she has also served on a number of committees and boards and has served as interim associate provost of research during her time at Spelman College.

Jasmine McClam, C’2020, is sharing her talents internationally – as a graduate Fellow via the U.S. Department of State at the Embassy of Panama.

For McClam, who expressed her excitement at the announcement via LinkedIn this summer, the opportunity is more like a promotion than a fresh start. In 2020, McClam was awarded the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship, which allowed her to spend the summer of 2021 working as an intern with the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. Now, she’s gaining hands-on experience with U.S. foreign policy.

During her time at Spelman, the international studies major discovered that she could work for global peace by bridging the gap between various cultures through diplomacy and traveled to seven Spanish-speaking countries to conduct research on how Afro-Uruguayan women mobilize politically.

In the summer of 2019, McClam interned with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and was selected as a Council of American Ambassadors Fellow.

Prior to graduation amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Missouri City, Texas, native also served in numerous leadership roles on campus including as president of the Mu Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a head Peer Assistant Leader (PAL), the intern for Spelman’s Women in Excellence Leadership (WEL) program and a Spanish tutor in Spelman’s Language Lab.

Following the completion of her graduate degree, McClam is set to become a U.S. Foreign Service Officer – a role that will allow her to extend her growing legacy of service to include service to her country.
