Spelman College, a global leader in the education of women of African descent, continues to rank high among the best colleges in the nation, according to the 2025 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Report.

For the 18
th year in a row, Spelman has been named the No. 1 Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the nation. This year, Spelman also moved up to secure the No. 1 spot among all colleges on the list of Top Performers in Social Mobility and remains among the top 40 Best National Liberal Arts institutions.

Spelman College recently announced a series of significant grant awards that underscore its commitment to academic excellence and the support of diverse student populations.

Faculty & Staff Highlights


Great work, Dr. Watson-Singleton! Natalie Watson-Singleton, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Spelman, was selected as a Hopelab Translational Science Fellow.

As one of six researchers from Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the fellowship's inaugural cohort, Dr. Watson-Singleton will be part of efforts designed to amplify the impact of mental health research at HBCUs with a focus on enhancing the mental well-being of Black young people.

Student Highlights

Congratulations, Ava! Glamour Magazine recently selected Ava Flanigan, C’2027, as one of its 2024 College Women of the Year: STEM Edition. Flanigan was recognized for breaking barriers, setting new standards and making a positive impact in her community.

For over 60 years, Glamour has celebrated exceptional undergraduate students through its College Women of the Year list, with this year’s focus being on students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Flanigan, a computer science and computer engineering double major, was chosen along with five other students for their stellar contributions to STEM and their communities.

Interested in studying abroad? Spelman College's Gordon-Zeto Center for Global Education, in partnership with CIEE, CEACAPA, and IES Abroad is offering eight study abroad programs in several destinations worldwide. These two-week programs count towards a general college elective or a non-major elective.

Alumnae Highlights

Alumna Samantha Jones, C'95, was recently named PNC’s regional president for Georgia, effective October 31. She brings nearly 30 years of experience and impact to PNC as a successful financial service executive.

Jones was most recently executive vice president and credit executive for the Commercial Banking Credit Execution team at Wells Fargo.
