Spelman College President Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., selected Dolores Bradley Brennan, Ph.D. to serve as the College’s interim provost.

"In making the selection, I kept in mind the work ahead of us in the next ten months," Dr. Campbell wrote in a letter to faculty and staff. "First and foremost, keeping our faculty safe and healthy. Second, maintaining a teaching and learning environment that enables you to sustain the academic excellence that you offer our students."

Dr. Bradley Brennan came to Spelman in 2001 under a joint appointment with the Yerkes National Primate Research Center of Emory University. A distinguished scholar in visual perception and development, physiological optics and visual system anatomy, Dr. Bradley Brennan has published 22 papers and book chapters on visual development and processing, most recently focusing on identifying effective treatments for childhood visual disorders. She was promoted to full professor at Spelman in 2010, and in 2012 elected to Epsilon of Georgia, the Spelman chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Dr. Bradley Brennan closed her Yerkes laboratory in 2016, about the same time that she transitioned from chair of the psychology department and college-wide director of Undergraduate Research to interim vice provost of Spelman.

Since 2017, as vice provost and associate vice president of academic affairs she has promoted initiatives for the professional development of department chairs, worked with faculty colleagues and departments to infuse active learning into the curriculum, supported faculty scholarship productivity, and new/junior faculty development, either internally or in partnership with entities such as the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity.

Meet Kerry Hixon,
Spelman’s New Cybersecurity and Compliance Director

As he gets settled into his newly appointed role, Kerry Hixon, director of cybersecurity and compliance, considers joining the Spelman community a highlight of his career.

In this role, Hixon is responsible for developing systems and controls designed to protect the school’s information systems and data.

"The proliferation of security threats all over the globe shows the need for all institutions to take cybersecurity seriously. Just look at the news," he said. "Unlike corporate America, institutions like colleges and universities have been especially vulnerable because their mission is to teach, which leads to open environments. In the eyes of cybercriminals, this openness is viewed as vulnerability and makes us a target to be exploited and attacked.  My job is important because we protect against these attacks."

Prior to Spelman, Hixon worked for six years as manager of cyber-risk services at Deloitte. Since arriving in March, the one thing that has stood out for him has been the high level of cybersecurity experience and knowledge throughout the Spelman community.

"Dr. Raquel Hill stopped by my office one day, and we had a brief discussion on SecOps that blew me away," he said. "She has one of the best minds in cybersecurity that I have had the pleasure to engage with."

Campus Highlights

Elycia Woodham, C’2024, is among the inaugural 10 students selected for the LA Opera’s new
artist development program.

A music major, Woodham serves as alto 1 leader and road manager for the Spelman College Glee Cub. She was one of the soloists for the 2020 Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol’s rendition of "Mary’s Canticle," held virtually.

LA Opera’s HBCU Opera Career Comprehensive is designed to nurture, support, and elevate the skills of talented singers from historically Black colleges and universities. From July through December, the artists will participate in 10 virtual sessions led by the company’s Artist-in-Residence, tenor Russell Thomas.

"As singing is in every fiber of my being, I was ecstatic and honored to be selected as a participant in the LA Opera’s Inaugural HBCU Opera Career Comprehensive program," said Woodham. "To date the offerings have enhanced the foundation instilled in me by the Spelman College Music Department. This experience reinforces and supports my desire to sing opera – and other genres – professionally as I continue to make deliberate choices to change the world."

Faculty testing positive for COVID-19 must report positive test results to the Office of Human Resources and Faculty Human Resources. If on-campus testing reveals positivity, the faculty member will not need to self-report. The nurse administering the test will report the positive case.

All COVID-19 positive employees are required to isolate ten days away from campus and produce a negative PCR COVID-19 test result to gain re-entry to campus. If a faculty member is physically able to deliver instruction remotely during their quarantine, they may teach classes remotely. If they are unable, Faculty Human Resources will work with the department chair to arrange for the continuation of instruction.

Identified vaccinated students and faculty in class/close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual are not required to quarantine. Instead, they must take a PCR test 3-5 days after exposure and continue to follow all safety protocols.
