Memphis native Jillian Jackson, C2022, introduced President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris before their recent appearance at the Atlanta University Center Consortium.

"I am so excited to hear the current administration's plans to combat the ongoing voting rights issues in our state," Jackson, a senior, political science major, Spanish minor, said in her introduction.

At Spelman, Jackson has served in student government each year and currently serves as the 80th President of the Spelman Student Government Association.

She is also actively involved in the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program, Alpha Lambda Delta, URGE, and Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight U. Jackson is also a member of the Mu Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

"Truthfully, the superlatives for this remarkable scholar, are too numerous to narrow down," Jackson's former English teacher Karen Garrison told CommercialAppeal.com. "Miss Jackson embodies the attributes of a developing leader supported by solid family values and a personal work ethic. Her social and political advocacy for meaningful change makes her an authentic influencer. I am incredibly proud of her. Get ready, world; this is only a rehearsal."

Economist Lisa D. Cook, C'86, was selected by President Biden to fill one of two empty seats on the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors. If her nomination is confirmed by the Senate, Dr. Cook will be the first Black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve Board.

From serving on the faculty of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, to serving on the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, and the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Dr. Cook has amassed a broad range of experiences in academia, across the financial sector, and in economic policymaking.

“Her nomination comes at a particularly auspicious time for Spelman," said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman College. "For the past several years, with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Dr. Cook has worked in partnership with the economics department, chaired by Marionette Holmes, Ph.D., to increase the number of Black women, who earn Ph.Ds. in economics. Dr. Cook is a stellar role model for our aspiring economists."

Dr. Cook earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy (magna cum laude) from Spelman, where she received the highly competitive Harry S. Truman Scholarship and the Charles E. Merrill Study Abroad Scholarship. After Spelman, she proceeded to St. Hilda's College, Oxford as Spelman's first Marshall Scholar where she earned another B.A. in philosophy, politics, and economics in 1988.

Campus Highlights

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s "Black American Portraits," co-curated by Liz Andrews, Ph.D., executive director of the Spelman Museum of Fine Art, was recently featured on Hyperallergic.com.

"Black American Portraits pays homage to today’s renaissance of Black figurative art, acknowledging the artistic achievements of Black artists and their contributions in rewriting the art historical canon, with all the celebration and the gravity deserved," wrote Caroline Ellen Liou, art historian.

Spanning from the 1800s to the present day, "Black American Portraits" highlights emancipation and early studio photography, scenes from the Harlem Renaissance, portraits from the Civil Rights and Black Power eras, and the multiculturalism of the 1990s.
