Spelman College marks another year as the No. 1 HBCU on the U.S. News & World Report 2023 Best Colleges list.For the 16th consecutive year, Spelman earned the distinction of being the No.1 historically Black college or university in the country and ranked No. 51 on the list of Best National Liberal Arts institutions, up three spots from No. 53 in 2021.The College ranked No. 5 on the list of Top Performers in Social Mobility. The College also ranked No. 9 on the list of Most Innovative Schools No. 9 on the list of Learning Communities for the second consecutive year."Congratulations to our Spelman College community for once again earning this recognition in the U.S. News & World Report’s ‘2022-2023 Best Colleges’ rankings, said Dr. Helene Gayle, President of Spelman College. "This acknowledgement reflects our dedication to academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and the intellectual, creative, ethical and leadership development of our students."In addition, Spelman rose nine spots to No. 12 on the list of Service Learning since last year and ranked No. 19 in Undergraduate Teaching, up six spots from last year.The College ranked No.46 on the list of Undergraduate Research while earning No. 49 on the list of First Year Experiences. After more than two years, the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC) will host its 2022 College Fair on Friday, September 16, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart Building 2- 2nd Floor Exhibition Hall."This will be among the largest in-person fairs for AUC students and will be the first time that three current classes, including the current Senior class, will have an opportunity to attend as a result of the pandemic," said Harold Bell, Director of Career Planning and Development at Spelman College.The career fair – set to be a sold out event – marks the culmination of a week of intentionally planned activities designed to get students prepared for the big employer showcase, including Sunday’s JCPenney SuitUp event, targeted workshops and informal career chats with recruiters in the Manley Student Center."Nearly 300 participating employers are excited to engage our students in-person opportunities," said Bell.The career fair is interdisciplinary and is open to students of all majors and courses of study. According to Bell, attendees can expect representatives from multiple industries looking for individuals to fill a variety of roles, both technical and non-technical."Students should approach the career fair with an open mind, regardless of their major, as opportunities will be available that they never knew existed that will definitely pique their interest," said Bell. "This could open doors of possibilities beyond their wildest dreams."Transportation for attendees will be provided from the CAU Student Center and the Spelman College side gate. On Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 1:00 p.m. EST, Chandler R. Nutall (Spelman College, SGA president), Nailah Rai Williams (Clark Atlanta University), Julian Ross (Morris Brown College) and Rollin "RJ" Jackson Jr. (Morehouse College), students at each of the undergraduate institutions within the Atlanta University Center, will join Atlanta Journal Constitution's (AJC) race and culture reporter Ernie Suggs for a virtual discussion, "Unapologetically HBCU". Students will discuss their campus and college experiences two years after the COVID-19 pandemic began.This event is sponsored by the AJC and is open to the public. Ayana D. Hernandez, C’97, was appointed as interim associate vice chancellor for strategic communications by Elizabeth City State University.

In her new role, Hernandez will manage all marketing, media, and brand management strategies while leading the execution and evaluation of the university’s internal and external communications. This plan is scheduled to be implemented by Hernandez’s new creative vision for the strategic communications division, as well as her production of an innovative – yet proactive – branding strategy set to highlight university strengths, ambitions, engagement, and its national profile.

Following her time at Spelman, Hernandez earned a Master of Arts degree in journalism and mass communications from New York University. Before joining ECSU in July 2022, Hernandez enjoyed a fruitful career at North Carolina Central University. She started as the director of public relations in 2012 before becoming the special assistant to the university’s chancellor.

Hernandez is not only an award-winning communications professional, but has worked with other notable organizations such as FleishmanHillard International Communications, Essence Magazine and the North Carolina Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
