Spelman College recently hosted the Black Beauty STEMinist Summit for its second year, bringing together students and professionals for three days of learning, networking, and hands-on experience.

Building on the success of its inaugural 2024 iteration, this year's summit brought together participants from universities nationwide to explore the intersection of STEM and beauty industry innovation.

The event, sponsored by L'Oréal, welcomed students eager to discover career opportunities in cosmetic science.

Faculty & Staff Highlights

Spelman College celebrates Anjanette Levert, MFA, senior lecturer of documentary filmmaking, for receiving a Peabody Award for her work as a producer on "The Only Doctor."

This historic recognition marks a first for director Matthew Hashiguchi and Levert, for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) documentary series "Reel South."

John Wagner Givens, Ph.D., associate professor of international studies at Spelman College, was named a Governor’s Teaching Fellow for the May 2025 Symposium, “Artificial Intelligence in the Holistic Classroom” — a highly selective honor that recognizes college professors from across Georgia who are pushing the boundaries of how we teach and learn.

Dr. Givens was one of just 16 faculty members chosen statewide to participate in this intensive program at the University of Georgia. The fellowship brings together educators from different schools and academic backgrounds to explore how artificial intelligence can be used responsibly and effectively in the classroom.

Chosen from over 8,000+ applicants, these Spelmanites are gaining hands-on experience with the NBA this summer through a fellowship powered by the NBA Foundation, MLT, and Fearless Dialogues.

Alumnae Highlights

Great work, Janelle! Alumna Janelle Farris, C'83, is the first African American woman to lead Brooklyn Community Services.

The 159-year old organization provides services and resources like affordable housing, access to increased youth education services and community togetherness, and has been a key element for residents impacted by systemic poverty.
