Dear Spelman Community,
Four years ago, at one of the country’s premiere women’s
colleges, members of the Spelman community gathered in Albert E. Manley College Center expecting to celebrate the election of the country’s first woman president. History disappointed.
Two years ago, we had high hopes that one of our very own Spelman sisters would make history by becoming the first Black woman governor in the country by being elected governor of Georgia. History said, "Not yet."
Stacey Abrams, C’95, responded: If not now, when? If not me, who? Whatever party we champion, we all have to agree that she rose up "undaunted" to fulfill the Spelman mandate to make a choice that changed the world. She changed the voting patterns of an entire state and, in so doing, inspired others and helped change the country. We salute our history making shero, Stacey Abrams, for her fearless leadership.

Our president-elect, Joe Biden, quoted the Irish poet, Seamus Heaney, who writes in his play, "The Cure at Troy,"
"History says, don’t hope
On this side of the grave
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up
And hope and history rhyme."
We applaud all of our students,
alumnae, faculty and staff who worked so hard to make justice rise up to make our vote count and our voices heard. And, as a Black women’s college and the No. 1 HBCU, we celebrate a woman, a Black woman, an Asian woman and an HBCU alumna as part of our national leadership team.
There is much work ahead and we are hopeful.
