Spelman Community,

We write today to share the College’s concern for the safety and well-being of members of the Spelman community and beyond who are being impacted by Hurricane Laura.

We are hearing that some students and faculty members in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana are experiencing significant challenges from the Category 4 hurricane that made landfall early this morning.

Your safety is our top priority. We know that classes have begun but please put safety first and take the necessary steps to make sure that you and your family and loved ones are protected from the storm. While Hurricane Laura has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm, as it moves through Arkansas headed toward the East Coast, we are aware that students and faculty may be experiencing service disruptions to electricity and wi-fi.

These disruptions and other challenges may prevent the ability to connect for classes and assignments.

Students, when your service or ability to access wi-fi and electricity is restored, please check in with your professors and let them know of any challenges you have incurred as a result of the storm.

We will continue to monitor the developments of the storm. Our entire community is keeping members of our Spelman community whose lives have been upended by the storm in our prayers.

Stay Safe,

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
President, Spelman College
