Dear Spelman Community,

Happy Juneteenth! Friday, June 19, is Juneteenth, a day-long commemoration in the African American community of the official end to slavery.

On June 19, 1865, the enslaved population in Galveston, Texas, was finally made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation, two and half years after it was signed into law on January 1, 1863, and months after Congress passed the 13th amendment that eliminated slavery. Since that time, Juneteenth has been celebrated throughout the Black community as our true Independence Day.
In honor of Juneteenth, I invite you to take a listen to part one of the Blue Record Podcast's summer series, Black Girls in Digital Spaces. Also, the Spelman College Glee Club is hosting the #BlackLivesMatter edition of Spelchella: Virtual Music Festival tomorrow at 5 p.m. EST via Instagram Live, featuring Glee Club students and alumnae.

Our Glee Club never fails to move us and I know they will do so again, as we reflect
on our long, ongoing struggle for the full realization of our rights and privileges as citizens.

Happy Juneteenth.
