April 20, 2020

Greetings Spelman Community,

I pray that you and your families are safe and well as we all continue to manage the impacts of the pandemic.

I write today with a brief update on the recent announcement that CARES Act funds are on the way to colleges and universities around the country.

As I communicated during last week’s town hall, Spelman is scheduled to receive $2.8M, of which $1.4M is earmarked specifically for direct assistance to students financially impacted by COVID-19.

During the April 16th town hall, you heard me say that we had received news that Spelman should be able to access its funds in 48-72 hours. We have now learned that the U.S. Department of Education will release specific details regarding distribution guidelines next week. Once the DoE releases those details, they should make the funds accessible to us.

In the interim, please remember that the Spelman Emergency Grant fund is still available to students. More information and the application can be found here.

Regards,

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
