Dear Spelman College community:

As the fall semester comes to a close, we want you to know that the search for the 11th president of Spelman College is ongoing and we remain confident that a new president will be selected in time to accept the baton from President Campbell when she retires on June 30, 2022.

In September, Board Chair Roz Brewer, C'84, announced the formation of a presidential search committee and the charge to:

1) conduct a comprehensive search,
2) identify and interview the most qualified candidates and
3) make recommendations to the Board of Trustees, which has the responsibility for selecting and appointing the president.

In this initial phase, the Board oversaw a competitive process to select the firm, Storbeck Search, to serve as consulting partner to the Presidential Search Committee (PSC). Storbeck Search’s deep experience and expertise managing executive searches for colleges and universities is invaluable for identifying and recruiting candidates from across the country.

We have also solicited input from the broad Spelman community, and you have responded with great enthusiasm. More than 1100 of you have participated directly in the process by:

1) attending group sessions for faculty, staff, students and alumnae,
2) completing our online survey and
3) submitting nominations or suggestions regarding the next president through calls and emails.

You have shared your experiences and aspirations for Spelman’s future and your ideas regarding what this means, as it relates to the challenges and opportunities for the next president and the skills and qualifications she will need to be an effective leader.

The leadership profile is now available on the website. We are seeking a leader who has the educational, intellectual, emotional intelligence and courage, to foster an entrepreneurial and innovative culture, while ensuring institutional relevance and value for a long-term future that is fiscally sound and vital to the success of our communities, our nation and the world.

During this next phase of the search we will be screening and evaluating more than 300 nominations and prospects to identify those candidates who meet and/or exceed the stated qualifications and express their interest in being considered. We encourage you to continue to provide us with the names of individuals whose qualifications and experience may be a great match for the position.

Please submit your recommendations to Shelly Weiss Storbeck and Euris Belle at SpelmanPresident@StorbeckSearch.com.

As we continue to identify, recruit, and evaluate prospective candidates, we want to remind you of the need for strict confidentiality. In order to attract the highest caliber of candidates, it is imperative that we guard their privacy so as not to jeopardize their current positions. The ability to maintain confidentiality, given the instant accessibility of information through social media and other electronic sources, is also an important element of Spelman’s reputation as an esteemed and honorable employer and institution.

We are committed to providing you with periodic updates, and also need to balance our desire to be inclusive and transparent with the need for confidentiality. We thank you in advance for your understanding.

As we move into the time of year of celebrations, we wish you and your family a joyful and peaceful holiday season.

Warmest regards,
Kaye Foster
