Spelman Community,
Today, a chemical spill occurred in the Albro Falconer Manley Science Center on campus.
The spill happened after a wheeled cart being used to transport the chemical became stuck in a crack in the floor, causing the cart to tip over.
The science center was
immediately evacuated. The Atlanta Fire Department was called and they, along with Spelman's Environmental Health and Safety Compliance staff, arrived at the scene within minutes.
The staff members who were handling the chemical have been determined to be safe and unharmed.
The fire department tested the air and reported that the oxygen level is normal with no traces of carbon monoxide or any other flammable gas. The absorbent sheets that were used to soak up the spilled chemicals are securely stored in the chemical waste room.
The location where the spill occurred has some charcoal remnants that the fire department deems nonhazardous. Public Safety placed a barricade around the location of the spill and Facilities Management Services is removing the remnants.
While the fire department has cleared the building for occupancy, if you are on campus, we ask that you avoid the Science Center until tomorrow, Wednesday, April 8.
