Dear Spelman Community,

Normally, during this time of year, many in our community would be planning trips and festive gatherings with loved ones to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season.

But this year continues to transform our traditions. As we consider safe ways to spend quality time with our family and friends, and we pray for those who have been impacted by COVID-19 and the economy, there is still much for which to be thankful.

We thank our faculty, the backbone of our teaching and learning. They have concluded their teaching, administering exams and are now engaged in grading. They have done that and served the College well on various task forces and committees. We applaud them.

In this season of appreciation, we also recognize our stellar staff without whom the campus could not operate. Essential staff came to campus to staff the switchboard, maintain the grounds, clean and tend to the upkeep and safety of buildings and patrol the grounds 24/7. Watching you work everyday has been an inspiration. Thank you.

Many more staff worked from home in less than optimal conditions but they kept our payroll going, watched over our endowment, managed our admissions and registrar’s office, provided oversight to budget and finance and tended to necessary hiring.

They supported faculty by helping maintain academic research projects. They kept us connected with timely communications, and administrative assistants throughout the divisions and academic departments kept those divisions and departments humming.

Our students depended on the activities and guidance of staff in Students Affairs and Wellness, as well as the spiritual guidance of Sisters Chapel.

None of this would happen with the expertise of Spelman Technology Services and their ability to develop technological solutions, deploy equipment and support hundreds of virtual sessions and programs.

As our students navigate uncertain times, career planning and financial aid campaigns, virtual career opportunities, guidance on financial aid need and creative efforts to shore up student success have been ongoing.

Throughout this time, Institutional Advancement has continued to raise funds for our students and programs to sustain the College, along with the Office of Government Relations. The Secretary of the College has kept the trustees fully informed and engaged every step of the way.

We are so grateful for all of your good work. Thank you. May you and your family have a healthy and safe holiday.
