March 27, 2024

Spelman Community,

This notice is to inform the campus community that a large tree will be removed from the side lawn of Rockefeller Hall on Friday, March 29, 2024. A month ago, a large limb dropped from the tree landing onto the steps of the building. The decision to remove the tree was made after a thorough consultation with private and city arborists, and to avoid potential injury to people or damage to buildings.

As a result of the removal, traffic between Rockefeller Hall and Manley College Center will be impeded on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Other trees set for future removal include:

  • Large oak tree at Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby, Ed.D. Academic Center facing Manley College Center
  • Large pecan tree at Spelman College Mail Center
  • Large pecan tree at Reynolds Cottage
  • Large oak at Giles Hall

Spelman College has been recognized as a Tree Campus USA community for over 10 years for its commitment to caring for and maintaining its campus trees. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Walsh
