Dear Spelman Community,

As you are aware, COVID-19 cases are on the rise across the nation, and we are seeing elevated numbers of reported infections in the AUCC (Atlanta University Center Consortium) community as students return to campus from across the country. After consultation with the AUCC Student Health and Wellness Committee, and the AUCC Council of Presidents, we are strongly recommending these measures:
  • Indoor masking on campus to include students, faculty, staff and visitors for the next two (2) weeks while we assess the trends and;
  • Repositioning large indoor events to outdoor spaces when possible.

Rest assured that our top priority is to maintain a safe environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors. Spelman College and the AUCC member institutions continue to follow the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Georgia Department of Public Health and the AUCC Epidemiologist. We will continue to monitor and adjust our protocols as necessary.

During this heightened season of respiratory viruses be sure to continue to follow
best practices, such as:
  • Frequent handwashing or use of hand sanitizer.
  • Engage in respiratory care by covering up sneezes and coughs.
  • Stay home if you feel sick and take a COVID-19 self-test.
  • Follow COVID-19 isolation and exposure guidance.
  • Stay up-to-date on vaccination recommendations.

We will continue to provide free access to preventative supplies. Surgical masks are available in masking stations throughout campus buildings. In addition, KN95 masks, disinfecting hand sanitizer and rapid antigen self-test kits are available through Spelman College COVID-19 Operations at 404-270-5407.

Spelman Student Health Services and the AUCC Student Health and Wellness Center are available to address student health needs via in-person or telehealth visits.

It is clear that COVID-19 is here to stay, and we need to continue to adapt to living safely with COVID-19 as we have with other respiratory infections.

Please continue to take the necessary steps to keep yourself and others safe.

Kind Regards,

Yemi Brown, PharmD
