Greetings Spelman Community,

Over the weekend, the impact of the Coronavirus became more significant. Since my last communication about Covid-19, we have learned of the unfortunate passing of two victims from the virus in the United States, as well as the diagnosis of cases in other cities in our country.

While at this time there are no known cases in Georgia, we remain vigilant in terms of cautionary steps and we continue to prepare for the worst. Spelman is following the travel-restriction guidance provided by the Department of State and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

We have cancelled all faculty, staff and student travel to countries that the CDC has listed as Level 3 and Level 4 as it relates to the Coronavirus. We have also been in constant contact with our several dozen students who are currently studying abroad, and will continue to provide them with the support they need.

Spelman is participating in an Atlanta University Center Coronavirus Task Force with other members of the Atlanta University Center Consortium to share information and best practices and to coordinate preparation and response activities. While our review of our emergency response processes, including our Health Response Team, Pandemic Response Plan and Business Continuity Plan, is nearly complete, we are moving forward with purpose.

The College is continuing to monitor this fluid situation daily, and closely following recommendations from the CDC and the Georgia Department of Public Health to stay prepared to do everything necessary to ensure the health and safety of our entire community.

To keep you aware of the latest developments, we have set up a Spelman Coronavirus Update web page. For international updates, you may also follow the daily World Health Organization Situation Report.
