Dear Classes of 2020 and 2021,

As juniors and seniors, you have experienced quite a disruptive educational experience. Yet, true to the undaunted spirit of Spelman students, you have risen to the challenges with grace and courage.

I am now pleased to share with you Spelman’s commencement plans for both the class of 2020 and the class of 2021.

Spelman will host in-person Commencement ceremonies for both classes on Sunday, May 16, 2021, at Bobby Dodd Stadium on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The Class of 2020
Your ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m.

The Class of 2021
Your ceremony begins at 3:00 p.m.

One baccalaureate service will be held virtually on Saturday, for both classes, May 15, 2021.

Because we will still be adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols, there are precautions that we will all need to follow. Despite these precautions, we envision your walk across the stage to receive your diploma in the presence of family and loved ones, albeit a greatly reduced, low density audience.

These measures also have an impact on the slate of traditional and new activities that Spelman will have during the Commencement season. Please see FAQs for the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021 for guidance about Commencement events and protocols.

The entire Spelman community is proud of you for continuing to display extraordinary resilience during this highly unusual past year. I have heard from so many of you in the Class of 2020, who are in graduate and medical schools and who have already entered careers like software development at technology firms, teaching via Teach for America and financial analysts at leading financial institutions.

Class of 2021, your plans for graduate programs, fellowships and positions in healthcare, education, research and technology fields are inspiring.

We know this has been a year like no other. But you have been steadfast in your drive toward excellence. And we are pleased to be able to find a way to celebrate you in person in one of the most cherished ceremonies of your Spelman experience. I look forward to greeting you and your families in May.
