Letter to the Community – Jacksonville Hate Crime Shooting and Campus Safety
Spelman College joins with communities across the nation in expressing sympathy to the families and communities who were directly impacted by the hate filled racially motivated shooting that occurred in Jacksonville, Florida, this past weekend. However, when
these senseless acts of violence happen, we know we all feel the impact.
We are also concerned about potential threats to our College and community, and we remain focused on prioritizing the safety of our institution and students. Over the past year, our Public Safety team has also taken numerous measures to improve overall security inside and around Spelman and has worked with local and federal law enforcement agencies to strengthen safety protocols and responses to potential threats.
In addition, understanding the mental health impact real or perceived threats may have, we offer free therapeutic services, which also includes an after-hours hotline, to address the mental wellbeing of our campus community. Spelman students can contact the Spelman College Counseling Center at 404-270-5293. Faculty and staff can contact our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at 1-800-523-5668 or 1-800-882-7610 (TTY) to receive counseling services.
