Dear Spelman Community,

Spelman joins with others around the world to mourn the passing of professor, colleague, mentor, and friend – Rev. Anthony Dahl, Ph.D.

For more than 10 years, Dr. Dahl served on the faculty here at Spelman in the Department of World Languages and Literature, and as department chair on two separate occasions. He has left an indelible mark on the students, faculty and staff at the College.

Through the eyes of members of the community, I have learned a great deal about his pedagogical innovation and commitment to Spelman. According to Jacqueline Alvarez-Ogbesor, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish and chair of World Languages and Literature, his students held great respect and admiration for him. Many students, since learning of his passing, have taken the time to visit with her and share their memories and experiences with him.

Dr. Dahl had an unbreakable desire to introduce Spelman students to many different cultures and a commitment to ensuring not only that they have academic success, but also become devoted to learning more about themselves and others.

During his tenure, Dr. Dahl inaugurated Spelman’s summer study programs in both the Dominican Republic and in Costa Rica and was instrumental in bringing the Portuguese language program to Spelman. He introduced a course on Afro Hispanic Literature to the World Languages and Literature offerings and was the inaugural professor representing Spelman at the Universidad de Valparaíso in Chile during a month-long exchange program.

The College celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Dahl, the fond memories, and his commitment to study abroad and global education. A memorial service will be held in the Bahamas on Friday, February 8, 2019. If you wish to send flowers, please send them to Bethel Brothers Morticians, 34A Nassau Street, the Bahamas, 242-322-4423. Cards may be sent to the Dahl family, 2718 Jodeco Circle, Lake Spivey, Georgia 30236.

We are grateful for everything Dr. Dahl contributed to the academic excellence of Spelman College.

In remembrance,
