Spelman Community,

I hope your spring semester is off to a great start. Due to the winter season, we are experiencing a heightened level of respiratory viral illness across the country. Respiratory viruses commonly cause illnesses such as flu, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Please be mindful of the following best practices to reduce the spread of respiratory illness:

  • Stay home when sick.
  • If you feel unwell or symptomatic (with fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, muscle or body aches, headaches, sore throat, or loss of appetite) get tested and talk with a health care provider.
  • Engage in respiratory care by covering up coughs and sneezes.
  • Wear a mask as needed for your self-care.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
  • Stay up-to-date on vaccination recommendations.
  • Follow COVID-19 isolation and exposure guidance.

In addition, here is a brief message from Dr. Mandy Cohen, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on ways to protect yourself during respiratory virus season.

For questions, support and free access to preventative care supplies (COVID-19 test kits, face masks and hand sanitizer), contact Yemi Brown, PharmD, at ibiyemibrown@spelman.edu or 404-270-5407.

Thank you for taking these precautions to protect yourself and others. Wishing you a happy, healthy and successful semester.

Kind regards,

Yemi Brown, PharmD
