Friends,

With sadness mixed with extreme pride, I write to share the news that Joyce E. Davis, Spelman College’s associate vice president of marketing & communications, will leave Spelman to become director of communications for diversity, equity, inclusion and social impact at Pearson Education, a global company that provides tools for lifelong learning. Joyce’s last day at Spelman will be Friday, July 16.

Joyce came to Spelman in 2007 in the role of associate director in the Office of Publications, which was a part of the Office of Communications. In the years since her arrival, she has grown by leaps and bounds, taking on ever expanding roles at Spelman.

When I arrived at Spelman in 2015, Joyce was serving in the position of director of communications. In the past six years, her talents quickly propelled her to lead important initiatives and ascend to director of marketing & communications and, most recently, associate vice president of marketing & communications.

In recent years, the entire Office of Communications has grown in terms of its presence and importance in the life of the Spelman community. Making use of the expertise and contributions of Spelman students, faculty and staff, Joyce and her team have crafted a Spelman narrative that vividly tells the stories that make our strategic plan vision come alive to prospective students, donors, the media and the general public.

In so doing, she and her team have placed on center stage the extraordinary contributions of all of Spelman’s stakeholders. They have done this expertly with weekly contributions of the Spelman Connection, the president’s weekly tweets, the twice-a-year Messenger, alumnae magazine, live stream events, town halls, a regular flow of press releases, and a lively website and social media presence. Often working with high level media contacts, such as national networks, major news publications and global thought leaders, Joyce has assisted Spelman in putting our best foot forward.

She has steered the College through any number of crises in a way that has enabled Spelman to tell its story with facts undistorted by rumor and hearsay.

She leaves behind a stellar Office of Communications – Ingrid Scurry Lassiter, Jazmyn Burton, Angela Wood, C'90, Allison Howard, Ashli J. Washington, DaNita Brady McClain, C'2003, and Mashaun D. Simon. In her absence, Jazmyn and Ingrid will manage the communications team, as a search for Joyce’s replacement is underway.

Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Joyce. She is someone of impeccable integrity, good judgement and a wisdom about the world and Spelman that I have found to be invaluable. I know that I speak for many in our community when I say that we will miss her, but we know that she will keep Spelman in her heart, wherever the world takes her.

All the best,
Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
President, Spelman College
