Dear Spelman College Community,

Before October 1, Congress must enact appropriations bills that establish discretionary spending levels for the new federal fiscal year or agree to pass a continuing resolution to temporarily fund federal government agencies to avoid a government shutdown.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN?

A federal government shutdown will have minimal impact on federally sponsored projects that are currently funded at Spelman College. Principal investigators and their teams may continue to conduct research and related spending. This spending includes salaries of employees funded from federal sources.

However, if a shutdown occurs, federal government employees will be furloughed, which may have the following impacts to the College:

  • Program officers or managers at the federal funding agencies will be unavailable to respond to questions or approval requests for changes to awards, etc;
  • Review of reports and proposals will be delayed;
  • Multi-year projects with continuing grant increments scheduled to be released during the shutdown will not be sent to the College until the government resumes its business. This may cause a gap in funding.

The College will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as available. We encourage you to contact the Office of Research, Innovation, and Collaboration via email at oric@spelman.edu, if you have additional questions regarding your federally funded research project.

Thank you,
