Given the growing concern around the spread of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, Spelman College is asking all students who have recently studied abroad in high risk areas to take extra precautions.
Students who traveled to high risk areas, or those who were exposed to persons diagnosed with COVID-19, should practice self-isolation for a period of 14 days. The period of isolation should start from the time they departed the high risk area, or after the last time they made contact with those who have been diagnosed
with the virus. This includes students who are not currently exhibiting the symptoms associated with the virus such as fever, cough or shortness of breath.
Prior to seeking care, students who develop symptoms during self-isolation, should call their healthcare provider to discuss their symptoms and travel history. If the healthcare provider
confirms exposure to COVID-19, the student will be given instructions on how to access care.
Students who are exhibiting symptoms after having traveled to high risk areas, or after having been in contact with those who have a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, should seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible, and perform the following actions:
Put on a facemask.
Avoid close contact, stay at least six-feet away from others.
Practice good hygiene by washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
When coughing or sneezing cover your mouth with a tissue or your elbow, not your hands.
In alignment with the protocols of social distancing, the Department of Student Health Services asks that all students speak with a health services staff member before coming to campus.
When seeking medical care, refrain from lingering in areas of the medical facility.
